Quick Questions XVI: Answer Time Lore

can’t vouch for it but this chrome extension looks interesting https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/storageace/cpbgcbmddckpmhfbdckeolkkhkjjmplo?pli=1

you could use it to manually inspect or remove things that the sites add to your localstorage. probably nicer than fucking around with the javascript console directly

My Sony MDR-7506 headphones finally broke after 12 years. Now I need something new. I already have wireless buds for exercising and phone calls, so I want a set of headphones that have high fidelity. Noise canceling and a mic are also nice, but I mostly just care about how things sound.

Does anyone have headphones they really like?

previously used a pair of Sennheiser HD555s - excellent, extremely comfortable
currently using a pair of Sennheiser HD6XXs - also excellent, sound is a bit better but slightly less comfortable

i mostly use Sony and Sennheiser for headphones depending on how much i want to spend

yeah i used 555s for about a decade and i’m currently using 599s (very similar!) although the foam ears definitely come apart and you have to replace those at some point

they are extremely comfortable though and i can keep them on basically all day with no fatigue.

BUT! note they are open back which means sound leaks in and out of them, so they’re not really suitable for noisy environments or environments where you don’t want others hearing what you’re listening to at low volume.

Sony MDR-7506s, have gone through 3 sets of pads and gluing the insulation back to the earpieces. though the biological realities of aging are starting to strain them (old man ears too big to be comfortable)

Yeah, I liked mine but for the discomfort!

i like the bose quietcomfort they are the first pair of headphones in my life that arent like, 349859345943 dollar studio headphones with velvet ear cushions that ive been able to wear for more than an hour at a time. usually headphones cause my ears unbearable pain

i have to factory reset them sometimes because bluetooth is fucky but its real easy at least

I use 2023 Bose QuietComfort for music/video listening and Sony H9 for videogames. They’re both wireless noise-cancelling closed-ear. The QC are by far the most comfortable cans I’ve ever used, while the H9 has better wireless quality+latency and a better mic. I’ve tried and returned a lot of headphones before settling on these.

yeah like it’s hard for me to express how comfy they are because every other headphone has hurt me so much

I didn’t even realize they had a mic

Hurt how? I can’t use any over the ear because it gives me ear fatigue. I’ve been stuck using apple earbuds/airpods for 15 years which isn’t bad as they are the most common headphones on the planet.

like it makes my ears really incredibly sore with pain and sensitive to the touch after wearing them if I wear most headphones for more than an hour, I just looked up ear fatigue and it’s nothing like that

I ended up getting this one, which has 3 buttons and allows you to map each button to either a key or a function (like a mute/unmute function). I like it a lot so far, particularly the fact that it comes with several different size springs you can set the pedal to, to make it more or less sensitive to the weight of your foot.

More expensive than I wanted to pay for it, but, I like it, and there’s very very little else in the world of foot pedals for computers, so I’m gonna call this a win.

I strongly considered using driving foot pedals, like would come with a Logitek racing wheel, but I don’t think I like the feel of my foot being at that angle for terribly long.

is anyone on here familiar with Marathon (1994) modding or know anyone who is? i’ve got a mod/“patch” (that’s what it calls itself) for Marathon Infinity and i’m trying to work out how to get it do anything.

Are you using Aleph One?

https://alephone.lhowon.org/games/infinity.html

If not, download Aleph One, unzip it then try putting the mod files in the Program Files folder and then run the Marathon Infinity.exe

yeah i’m using aleph one, but there’s something about the files that it doesn’t like. unfortunately the error is extremely vague (make sure maps, sounds, etc. are “installed properly” and try again).

i’ve tried pointing the engine directly at the original folder, as well as replacing the files in a copy of marathon infinity with those from the patch, but i still get the same error.

Did the mod come with a readme.txt file? Usually that will tell you what you need to do to run it.

You could try looking for the mod on Simplici7y and see if there are instructions there for how to get it working

also yes, but it’s a mod from 1999, so the readme is as follows:

Bio-Tek Kitchen was created with Forge and Anvil in June1999. This demo contains only the level we made. Copyright 1997 in whole or in part Bungie Software Products Coporation. Created with Bungie's Forge and Anvil by <leon@autonomous.org> & <starrs@autonomous.org>

This game is a patch for Marathon Infinity, and is a self contained level. Please use your current Marathon serial number or 4N1CHZHAGYPTFYFB to run Bio-Tek Kitchen.

Use the Tab key to open doors and read computer terminals, the space bar to use kitchen implements and the number key pad to navigate.

edit for clarity: i’m in the process of trying to preserve this mod, so i’m both trying to play it, but also trying to make it compatible with the new community engine.

From here (Bio-Tek Kitchen is listed among the 3rd party scenarios in this pack):

For these 3rd party scenarios you’ll need a fresh copy of Aleph One, for each. Just drop a new Aleph One app into the folder of the scenario you want to play, and you are ready to go. No conversions, installs, or other hoop-jumping necessary.

Sounds like you just need to copy the Aleph One.exe into the scenario’s folder. Or maybe copy the Aleph One folder itself, but I’d try just the application first.

Apologies if you’ve already tried all this.
