Quick Questions XVI: Answer Time Lore

fwiw, nowadays you can get pedal actuators that can be configured to offer whatever dynamic damping effects you want:

(you’d want the adjuatable arm, just sayin’ …)

… now for the catch:
one of these will set you back … idk, 300-400 bucks?

It was horrible. ^ D ^

I don’t often let myself fall into the whole “boy it would be nice to live in another era when progress was more novel and unambiguous” false dichotomy very often but I have to say I do get slightly jealous of like humanities professors and cultural theorists who had the slightest idea how computers worked in the early 90s when hypertext was novel because I encountered them all dining out on that shit 15 years later and I totally cannot blame them

The two profs for “Computer Programming as a Liberal Art” were EXACT Mac geek stereotypes to the point where I was a bit confused sometimes because one was a slightly plumper Woz clone and I wasn’t quite sure who Woz was. And they were absolutely terrible at teaching. I sure didn’t learn Hypercard in any meaningful way. The occasional assignments we got were incredibly vague and I’m not sure were even checked; I tried to do them anyway (hm, at first–think I slacked off later because there didn’t seem to be any point) but always felt like I was doing them badly because besides being unclear on what the work was supposed to consist of, we weren’t taught anything concrete and didn’t receive any feedback. I suppose they were just there to cash in on the university’s Mac contract and get an easy paycheck.

Yeah I got bamboozled (and so did my alma mater) by a humanities charlatan who got the university to sign off on a “digital media” program that never really materialized in a real way in the years I was there.

But how could this have happened, he’s got a German doctorate in Informatics on top of two art degrees! And is a hipster! And totally made this not-at-all phallic diagram!

I tried two different sets of thrifted usb transcription pedals for this and kept running into ancient driver issues. If you do crack this, I’d love to know what you went with.

All I managed was universal foobar2000 shortcuts. Because they always just registered as instantaneous presses game stuff ended up being no good.

you could go to the old teachings and hook an expression pedal up to a USB MIDI interface & find/write a program to convert MIDI events to keypresses

most sustain pedals are momentary, and rely on the controller to track if it’s turning on or off

wtf is TXXX metadata?

i just grabbed a bunch of music from unnamed vgm site and some of the tracks have hidden (as in: does not show up when inspecting with “stat” or “ls” or the file browser) metadata in them which links them to other tracks. this results in really weird file behaviour: playing one track automatically loads up the other tracks listed in its “cuesheet” metadata, and sending that track over discord automatically bundles all the associated tracks together into one file.

i guess i’m gonna use metadata cleaner to get rid of it but i’ve never encountered anything like this before.

edit: metadata cleaner was unable to remove the metadata! what the hell man.

Does anyone remember if Onimusha Warlords is even particularly stressful/tense or not? I’ve played a bit of it, having learned that it’s kind of like Samurai Resident Evil, and it just doesn’t seem that tense or interesting from the little I’ve played. But are there any onimushavangelists in our midst?

is that the one @SuperWes did the strategy guide for

It can’t hope to maintain any tension with all the resource management stripped out. Despite that, I still found it entertaining at the time!

Yeah it’s definitely not boring. But I put it on a list of survival horror games to explore, and it just ain’t really cutting the mustard of my own expectations. May just finish it because it is so short, and the backgrounds are excellent. Horrible english dub though holy hell!!

It’s way more devil may cry than resident evil

Yeah, it has survival horror in its lineage but it always felt more like an action game in the end than a horror game. I think I even found atmosphere in Devil May Cry “scarier” than Onimusha.

The new Onimusha should be cancelled if it won’t have an industry-leading CG FMV opening.
