Even though there are now at least a handful of current gen games I want to play I’m still holding off on getting a PS5 for at least another year because the rumor is they’re going to announce a PS5 Pro next year and I’d feel like such a chump if I bought one before then.

Apart from the pandemic shit show, I had a moment when the PS5 and Series X hit where I thought, y’know, “ah fuck here we go. That’s $500 per console, probably more for memory since my brain is broken and I want nearly every game installed at all times ‘just in case,’ new controllers, gotta sign up for online services again, etc.” and realized I could modestly update my PC for about $400 and be OK for games for a while.
I guess my biggest hangup is that, having never been a PC gamer, it still feels “wrong” to me. Games are on the teevee, not computer. I’m…mostly over it (frankly, had I caved and gotten a PS5 for something like Mortal Kombat 1 I would be fucking pissed at myself), but I know I could play the Yakuza games with instant load times on my computer, but…that’s a TV game.
I could also just, y’know, run a long ass HDMI cable to my TV. Solve my troubles. But, ehhh, tripping hazard.
So now I do most of my gaming on Switch, and only really look forward to the Switch 2 or whatever is coming down the pipeline. If Spider-Man 2 didn’t get me to run out and buy a PS5, nothing will.

I got a $1000 mid-range gaming laptop from Amazon 4 years ago to do video capture, gradually started picking up little PC games for it, figured it was good for running older stuff I could get cheap off Steam/GOG/Itch/wherever. Then I found it could run even new stuff like Pinball FX at like 300 fps. Then Capcom put out a performance test app for SF6 and this laptop aced it, full detail, 1080p 60 fps (slight dips in the open-world mode but I wasn’t going to play that mode) WHILE doing full video capture. Oh. Guess I won’t need to buy in on this console generation after all, neat. : _) I’d basically switched from PC to console around the Dreamcast era, guess now I’ve switched back.

Of course I have now discovered that Alan Wake 2 runs like sour ass on my PC even with low settings for reasons that are inscrutable to me, so it looks as though once again my petard has hoisted me

iirc you have a 1070 and this was the first game to require a new hardware-level feature (mesh shaders) introduced after that generation (of which, other than ray tracing, there are very few), without which it runs like junk
I only replaced my 1080 Ti this year and mostly because I needed a new CPU, my GPU was fine for everything I wanted otherwise, the hardware generation cutoff feels a bit arbitrary

it makes my 2070 like 82 degrees at 640x480, still goes down to like 30-40 fps every once and a while but i only had to switch resolution for a puzzle once so as far as i am concerned it is a miracle despite being a computer melting game

There’s some pretty funny bits in the remake! When you push El Gigante into his vulnerable state, and the plagas erupts out his back, Leon goes “You got worms too, huh!??”
