Quick Questions XVI: Answer Time Lore

in windows 10 you can at least disable the device which should prevent windows from auto-switching when you plug it in and being seen by apps and the os’s device switcher interface. is that the goal? I assume it should work in windows 11 too.

Working myself up to buying a new console to play Alan Wake 2. I could use my store credit to get a Series S without paying any out of pocket costs. For that game, it looks like it runs perfectly fine. I hear other releases on the Series S don’t, but do I give a shit? I don’t know anymore…

im not too fussy but never been bothered by performance on the series s.
i don’t have a 4k tv or anything and it doesn’t usually look that much better than the ps4 did for me, but things play well enough for me.
either way there’s not been any convincing argument for a series x or ps5 yet.

I asked my kids if they would want a PS5 for Christmas and they were like …I guess…? Like the new consoles don’t even excite 11 year olds

What even was the last exciting game for children?

The seven year old in my life is waay more excited to play absolute iOS trash than anything on a console.

my favorite PS5 fact is that, despite it constantly moving hardware week by week in Japan, it seems to not be moving any physical software (charts are dominated by Switch games)

seemingly, the Japanese market is buying PS5s to play Genshin and Apex

ps5 games all either look like prestige television, or they’re weird nonsense for otakus like that mecha-building game.
all the games for kids and normal people are on the switch.

the console power arms race might actually be permanently dead (it probably died as soon as every major console could run the same version of minecraft with an infinite world)

anecdotally from what i’ve seen/heard from the kids of my sisters, it’s mario, fortnite and minecraft. roblox too if parents allow it

there’s really no need for the ps5 in this world

I still think the dropoff in general interest from PS4 → PS5 is totally unprecedented. even in the early PS3/360 era when a lot of developers severely fell off and couldn’t execute, games were still a lot more interesting. here it’s like, execution is still happening, but everything got way, way more boring, including to most of the demographics that you’d think need to keep propping this stuff up

my only complaints on series S performance are from devs not caring about it as a target. alan wake 2 is gorgeous at 60 but SF6 looks like a ps4 game running at 720p & upscaled. and i guess whatever is going on at larian about not being able to render their dick physics in split screen. it sounds like BG3 is a “duct tape and string” operation from all the bugs i’ve read about so i am not holding out much hope for that one

you gotta run every game in performance mode tho. i’m sure my VRR displays smooth some things over too

edit: also it doesn’t technically do real 4K, it uses some scaling trickery. if you have a 4K TV and notice these things you’ll probably notice it. i don’t and play on a 1440 monitor much of the time (which it outputs natively) so it doesn’t bother me

For my own part, and I don’t know how transferable this is to like Regular People, starting in the PS360 era we started saying “these things are just PCs now, just buy a PC”, and it both took a long time for that principle to sink in as common wisdom and also become more or less true (it wasn’t really true in the PS3 or 4 eras). Add in the way that streaming, which is now the primary way of socially enjoying videogames, is totally PC-centric and boom, even COD bros are buying RGB keyboards and shit now.

I feel like I’ve mentioned it elsewhere but I have a brand spanking new Series S in an unopened box and while I have the “baby” excuse for not having any gaming time I dunno if I’d be in a hurry to break it out even if I had time.

Idk does someone want to buy it from me I can cancel out some of what I’ve spent on this action figure collection I’m building

i mean, that’s what i bought mine for, to play ps4 games better. it’s like a pc upgrade.

i don’t regret it but if not for that i wouldn’t have bought any new console, what for? i guess there’s alan wake now, 3 years after launch?

it’s also true that both the pandemic and the gradual transition toward Game Pass / Epic / Twitch freebies more or less coincided with the console generation cutover, so there’s this endless stream of content now on PCs (and to a lesser extent within Microsoft’s ecosystem) that is probably more than enough for most people, and between that, the disappearance of midbudget indie stuff outside of those channels, and the relegation of AAA to live service games…

well, as I’ve mentioned, I really wasn’t expecting my interest in videogames to dive that much c. 2021 after I’d been as engaged as I ever was as an adult with a career for the entirety of the PS4 generation, it just snuck up on me
