the double dragons that are NOT real, but are definitely worth playing are the Gameboy games that are reskinned kunio and the fighting game Rageof Dragons which does Double Dragon as a fighting game that is not terrible the way the fighting games that actually have the double dragon name.
The master system port of the first game is pretty great too if yoy want an experience that doesn’t demand credit feeding

nes double dragon ii is nicer on the big double dragon/kunio collection that’s on modern consoles, since it maps jump to a single button, instead of having to press two together. plus, that collection has a ton of stuff in it, so you can try other parts of the series too.
the game boy kunio beat em up is really good. you’ll be able to 1cc it in 3 tries or fewer, but it’s a great time every time.

yeah I like that one and think it’s a cool game, but I don’t think of it as the “real” Double Dragon II

So if I don’t have a particular desire (or the money) to own hardware or physical copies of games, but I’m interested in tinkering, the sound and visuals of original hardware, and in exploring big catalogs: is a mister the thing for me?

i will add that snac adapters for original controllers is a really cool way of being able to engage with ‘original hardware’ without the collector or cost aspects while still being within the mostly digital space

I will say most of the misters don’t naturally have an off button, but the superstation-1 does and mine from RetroCastle on aliexpress also does, but that is an anamoly.
Yeah, misters are perfect for this. You can do a lot with them. I was even able to connect a JP Densha de Go PS1 controller to mine using a SNAC adapter and then play all PS1 Densha games with it!
You can also just connect them to a modern TV via HDMI and games will look good, especially with the solid CRT filters included.

They do sell USB C cables with built-in power switches, which works great for mine.

I mean, depending on language barrier, the Japanese ones that get put out for each system as weird magazine/books are way cheaper. Those do look nice, though.
I have the master system one, it’s pretty good I think. Pretty big chunky book with a slipcase. Most of the games get a double page spread with one big screenshot and a few paragraphs, but some games get a foldout showing level layouts etc. Covers a good range of games with some obscurities and odd ommissions (there’s no Wonderboy games for some reason but it does have the Brazilian Monica versions)
Also came with 3D glasses for the pages features the 3D games, although i don’t think the effect worked that great
That’s so weird it didn’t include Wonder Boy. I feel like that’s a pretty essential Master System series.
Rights issues get really peculiar. The Mega Drive Collected Works book got an updated print last year and that’s missing Wonder Boy stuff and Ecco.
