The other day I suddenly thought about an old indie freeware game I downloaded some time probably in the mid-2000’s. I think it was called “Space Junk” or “Space Garbage” or something like that. It was an Asteroids clone where you played as a space garbageman destroying asteroids in order to clean up space. Every level, you’d raise money that you could then spend in a shop between levels to upgrade your ship. I think it had colorful vector graphics.

Does anyone remember this game? I probably found out about it from an old indie games thread on Insert Credit or SB1. I am having a very difficult time turning it up now though, especially because there’s a seemingly unrelated Asteroids clone called “Space Junk” on steam now.

“These defendants lined their pockets by stealing and selling the intellectual property of other video-game developers–even going so far as to make customers pay a licensing fee to play stolen games,” said U.S. Attorney Brian Moran after the arrests in 2020. “This conduct doesn’t just harm billion-dollar companies, it hijacks the hard work of individuals working to advance in the video-game industry.”

He didn’t exactly end strong on that one.

what you’re describing reminds me of this old cactus game

That’s not the one I’m thinking of, but it does sound great! I remember really enjoying some of Cactus’s work from around that time.

There is a classic Mac game that somewhat matches the description. However, maybe you’re actually thinking of Gamma Bros?

It’s neither of those, but they both look fun. I guess this is a popular theme for an Asteroids clone!

On a whim I decided to ask ChatGPT and it confidently told me that I was looking for a nonexistent 2005 Jason Rohrer game called “Space Debris”, lol. In case you needed more evidence that these AI tools aren’t ready for prime time.

OMG, I found it!

Apparently Super Space Rubbish (2011) is currently available via that classic early-2010s indie game distribution method of bundling the installer inside the soundtrack .rar file and uploading it all to Bandcamp. Love it!

I downloaded the game and it still works in Windows 10. It holds up pretty well too! It has some very weird and distinctive asteroid physics. The closer to their center you fire, the more nicely they break up and the more resources you get out of them. Glancing blows tend to bounce off or only take tiny slivers off. If you keep hitting off center, you get all these long, thin asteroid shards, which you can then fly around and hit on their broad side for massive satisfying damage. I’m having some fun with it!

The more I replay this, the more I realize that it has to be the most 2011 freeware game ever released. But in a good way! All the little design tropes of the era are used to their fullest. It’s really fun and has a ton of personality.

I think my Vita’s right stick is drifting, anyone know of reputable replacement parts I could get a hold of? It’s a second gen Vita if that matters…

Is that kojima podcast worth listening to

Did anybody actually play that Choo-Choo Charles game that folks went nuts over, or did it just wind up being bait for Twitch streamers?
