why have rhythm game developers started camoflaging their games? i thought i’d bought a dodgeball game in a psn sale, it’s actually a rhythm game in disguise.
i’m sure i’ve seen them masquerading as rpgs and beat em ups, too

I’m guessing it has something to do with how Guitar Hero/Rock Band suddenly collapsed from a zillion sales to basically zero when the entire playerbase got exhausted with the genre seemingly overnight
They might be trying to deliver the fun of rhythm games that got people addicted in the first place, without the stench of “fad from the 2000s”
Considering how long DLC kept coming out my read was always that players bought a boxed release that they felt would be a forever platform, while publishers prioritized new boxed releases like it was a sports franchise. Eventually a boxed release would lose a critical mass of players, and they’d roll back to the last version to have enough hangers on and keep it in low profile mode.
is there discussion of fatal frame maiden of black water here somewhere? I decided to play this on a whim and um. idek what to say about it lmao but I’m really curious what the sbutt reaction was
I got it recently because it was on sale and as a fan of the ps2 games my curiosity got the better of me.
it’s a definite step down from the older games. The previous ones were full of ps2 era jank, but pretty much everything they did to modernise this one was a step backwards. Practically every chapter in the game is ‘someone went missing on the mountain, better go look for them for some reason’.
But really my main reaction to the game is why is it so god damn horny. Like geez man, i don’t remember the others being quite so bad as this one. It really undermines the spooky atmosphere
when the main character’s chest takes a full five seconds to settle down every time she turns around. Then there’s the wet clothes mechanic. When you learn the true colour of Miu Hinasaki’s underwear you will be ashamed of your words and deeds.
I looked up a gameplay video of it a while back and saw that the most efficient way to play is to try and grab an item and let go of the button as soon as some sorta ghostly appendage starts to appear.
The fact it does that slow zoom, will they/won’t they attack thing for every single item…I dunno.
Is what happened to Jeff Gerstman an open secret yet?
I am very curious too
I was thinking about this game too recently (it was on sale) and without looking into it too much, decided it has nothing going for it without the Wii U gamepad. And the only reason they keep rereleasing it over the others is because it’s the only HD fatal frame game
it’s funny bc, yes, this game is a huge a mess, but part of what is charming me about it is how anachronistically full of PS2-era jank it still is!
but yeah, the horniness is off-putting, I haven’t played much of the earlier games so I kept thinking “has it always been this trashy?” but it results in a deeply campy, bizarre experience. and game seems to have a lot of queer vibes so far, despite how male-gazey everything is, the plot has so far been these sad-girl goths holding each other and talking about suicide constantly, and there’s at least one sub-plot that strongly suggests a tragic lesbian romance.
or maybe I’m giving the game too much credit lol. like it’s trashy but I’m actually having a great time with it so far, given the above caveats.
Is there someplace on SB or SB classic where people discussed FF XIII? Something in my mind is going “you’ve owned a copy for years, you should at least try it” and I recall it either being divisive or doing a bad job of explaining how it wants someone to play it, so given my history of overlooking things I’d like a bit of knowledge heading in to make sure I don’t end up overlooking something important. I… do that a bit too frequently for comfort.
it’s definitely come up here and there on nu-SB but i don’t think there’s been a dedicated thread here. i guess it’s divisive because it’s linear and the storytelling is a bit of a mess. but for what its worth it plays beautifully, the linearity is its strength, it’s gorgeous, and the soundtrack rips. very luxurious and personally its my favourite final fantasy.
i don’t think there’s really any Advanced Knowledge you need to know going in, it generally does a good job teaching you how to play it & again, it is pretty linear
There is an old Hinge Problems episode I listen to every once in a while about it (even though @Rudie doesn’t seem to like their older episodes anymore)
It’s an interesting very linear game that is completely in line with the other games in the series but is more honest about it’s linearity and it has a cool combat system that is introduced in little combat puzzles (that I liked quite a bit at the time) that explore your moveset, culminating with a more complex stuff after you unlock all the characters’ full potential later.
The combat system is kinda funky, and all about changing your party configuration, and gear shifting through ‘gambits’ (which is kinda like a selection of jobs you pick yourself?) to beat stuff with the most efficiency.
Structurally, it reminds me the most of FFX, and has a similar level of confusing cheesball junk. I love that stuff, but if you don’t you may not like it. If you already have it, I’d say give it a shot.
Haven’t played it myself, but from what I’ve heard the game is better when you disable the minimap so it doesn’t spoil every last contour of the traversable space.
did the ancient youtube vids thread get axed or am i just kitchen blind
This one?
cheers ledge
