Quick Questions XV: Episode Prompto

FF7 is a glorious mess and is the most brisk of the 3 imo

any games y’all would recommend for wowing myself with shiny HDR? the easier to set up the better lol

devil may cry 5 looked really good in HDR oddly enough, that one stuck with me

I have an HDR projector but not an HDR monitor and my PS4 isn’t hooked up to the projector in a way that HDR works so I only very, very rarely play games in HDR, it’s just when I’m playing PC stuff on the couch

The Ashina Estate (specifically the burning village section) in Sekiro has been my go-to demo

Gran Turismo Sport or 7 look incredible with headlights against the asphalt (Forza Horizon 5 is no slouch but it doesn’t go for realistic color grading so the effect is muted)

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is trash but the color presentation on the cave in the opening is outstanding

Resident Evil Village has a great cool look. 2 Remake looks excellent, too, though 3 seems a bit (a lot) oversaturated.

You can also start to play with injectable HDR. Windows 11 has an ā€œauto HDRā€ feature, while Special K can add it to anything it can find the HDR buffer. Dragon Quest XI in HDR is absurd and astounding, just searingly bright. (speaking of which, the best/craziest animated HDR grade I’ve seen is the 4k release of Space Adventure Cobra, it simulated looking at the cels against a light table.)

Oh yeah I’ve gotta look into movies too, only HDR film I currently know I have access to is John Wick lol

hard to go wrong with nature documentaries

pretty much every 2160p rip on rarbg (and there are a lot of them these days) has HDR, and this is by far, by far, my biggest use of it. I can’t imagine dealing with an equivalent physical media setup and it’s very nice

what’s the optimal way to not get owned in doing that? my hygiene is rusty

a friend’s plex has HDR spider verse and it looks extremely good on this television

oh yeah everyone is always talking about friends’ plex servers these days but I’m too controlling to not just immaculately maintain my own NAS volumes and exclusively expose them over SMB

this is my secret cheat, I mostly download stuff from friends’ plex servers directly

unless they live in Australia in which case I couldn’t take that bandwidth from them, that would be cruel and unusual

I would not recommend FFIX to any fan of JRPGs

I’ll be honest, I know it was never as popular as the others, but I never ever understood why – it always just seemed like the best one to me in terms of presentation, writing, pacing, challenge, etc

I’m the right combination of 80s millennial and OCD that if I’m looking at someone else’s server I would be too busy thinking ā€œI’m sorry, is this a reencoded scene rip?ā€ to enjoy it

Tactics RPGs have glacial pacing too and that’s your favorite genre, I imagine that has something to do with the difference in perspective

that’s usually a downside of those though, the good ones are generally much faster

HEVC saves gigabytes, also if you’re peeping at the metrics you’re not watching the movie

also speaking of this I couldn’t get your SMB thing to work remotely
