I feel like we all collectively got an opinion on Shovel Knight, but did any of us try Pocket Dungeon?
i need that gif of doomguy face taking a bunch of damage really quickly that someone had as their avatar or maybe it was an sb1 sig or something idk i thought i had it onhand but i donāt
this?:
itās doomdie in the emote list
Itās actually just the whole sprite sheet in a row
This is probably going to be a terrible GameFAQs circa 2003 style question, so apologies:
Playing through Chrono Cross piqued my interest for other PS1 era JRPGs, as my experience with them is embarrassingly minimal (I was an N64 kid). I noticed that the PS1 Final Fantasies are all 50% off right now on Switch, so my question is basically āWhich PS1 Final Fantasies am I likely to enjoy based on the following:ā
- I completely bounced off FFX and FFXII, and am not particularly into the Miley Cyrus Disney Channel vibes they give off
- FFVI and Chrono Trigger are probably still top 10 GOATs for me
- FFIV is okay I guess
- I played about an hour of FFVII on PS3 years ago but I guess I wasnāt in the mood for JRPGs in those days
- Iāve loved pretty much all the SaGaās and DQās Iāve played. (I realise these two series are probably diametrically opposed to each other so that maybe doesnāt help the question)
- Also Grandia 1 was pretty good
2nd question: How bad are the Switch ports?
play IX
play viii because itās cool but you might hate it
I second IX. The switch port is fine from what Iāve played of it. The pre-rendered backgrounds suffer a bit on an LCD but IX is hardly unique in that way.
Iāll third IX, based on your preferences. It was a throwback to the old school style back in 2000 but these days itās kind of just another classic era jrpg. Still a very charming game and probably has the best first disc of the three PS1 FFs. Such tight story pacing and distinctively unique characters. Or maybe just character designs. I donāt remember much about their actual backstories.
All the ps1 FFs are really worth playing, 9 is the most normal but most polished, none of them are duds like 10.
IMO when revisiting JRPGs in general ā and especially slower-paced ones like FFIX ā emulator fast-forward is an indispensable quality-of-life feature. And the only official Switch port Iāve ever seen with that feature is Sega Ages Phantasy Star
Come to think of it, my recommendation is to forget about FF and just play Sega Ages Phantasy Star. Itās kind of like in the midpoint between a SaGa and a DQ
Ah yep, already got this one. I think it actually has two separate fast-forward features, one that speeds up the game via holding a button and a menu option that just doubles the walking speed.
Basically the golden standard for retro re-releases Iād say.
A quick google search seems to imply FFIX on switch has a fast-forward feature. Chrono Cross has one too, but frustratingly it doesnāt work during battle transitions and victory jingle, which is when I would want to use it
My current belief is that if I have to use fast forward to make a game tolerable itās not a game I should bother playing.
I am not trying to dissuade anyone from playing any games or using the feature ā itās a great one! ā itās just a rule I try to live by now.
I adopted it after having a rather blah time liberally fast forwarding through Earthbound but a very rewarding time doing it āold styleā (aka āSnail Playā).
ā¦itās different if it doesnāt fuck up the music though (God that Switch Phantasy Star is so fucking good)
Just sharing a little thing I think I do but probably donāt, in reality.
it does & this is unfortunately exactly how it works. 9 is impressive in a lot of ways but it is either excruciatingly slow or probably slightly too fast in triple speed
āJRPGs are like baseballā is a thing Iām gonna start saying and just hope no one asks me to elaborate cuz I have absolutely nothing to back it up, just want nerds to think Iām more of a jock than I am
I played about 90 minutes of the modern FF8 port and the amount I was crushing R2 to fast forward made me consider doing anything else.
In short: play Star Ocean.
find 9 glacial and ultra boring so iām surprised there are so many marks for it here
the other two are great, 8 is probably the most (at least romancing) saga like, youāre discouraged from grinding and there are a million ways to break it
so in conclusion
play suikoden 1 and enjoy the blue skies
By slow, do you mean like plot pacing, or the actual gameplay speed / combat animations etc? Because i can probably tolerate the former more than the latter.
both!
Lol, well i bought IX a couple hours ago already and wish-listed the other two, so Iāll see how that goes and if Iām not feeling it, Iāll grab VIII as well
Scarlett Grace is 70% off again too, probably should get that at some point
