Here’s where anyone of the 15 of you that talk to me every day can comment on the sound quality of apple earbuds.
honestly not sure how snobbish this will sound but I would describe the baseline quality of apple earbud mic pickups as “free” – like most apple accessories, they aren’t priced at all competitively when sold on their own, and the audio input is good enough in that there isn’t really any cognitive penalty from having to listen to it for up to an hour at a time, but beyond that (for either mastering or longer conversations) you can definitely do better, even in the <$50 range with some legwork. but if you have some laying around or know someone who does, they are better than having to actually buy something else.

i will say that i kind of do the opposite of the car test when it comes to listening to my own music and checking the sound - if it sounds good in apple earbuds they’ll usually sound good wherever, i just needed to figure out what things sounded like on the apple buds
still hate what they did to the headphone jack but the buds themselves are kind of like the sony mdr7506s of earbuds in that they’re neutral as hell so you can be guaranteed that they sound “true”

I used to fuck around with the “diamond in the rough” budget earbuds that seem to pop up every other week that so-called audiophiles love to rave about discovering, but I got tired of having to replace them literally every month. It’s not really a value if you have to replace the goddamn things almost immediately. Go on Amazon and search for any earbuds with a mic for $15 and get those if you’re looking for something that won’t cost you more than $20. They’ll probably last you a few weeks longer than the audiophile flavor of the weeks. Sony, Phillips, and Panasonic all make decently-priced “I’ll treat these like shit” earbuds with mics.

Otherwise, I recommend spending a bit more on something like the Koss Porta Pros if you don’t mind on-ear because they’ll also function as really good headphones. The versions with the microphone are a bit more expensive than the vanilla versions, so they lose a bit of the budget appeal you get from the Porta Pros, but they’ll last you a while and they’ll sound better than 99.9% of the earbuds you’ll ever place into your ears. You can also buy replacement foam earpads in various colors to make them feel a whole lot better and also look way cooler. I got red ones last time.

I had a pair of these in red that lasted me a while. It seems like more companies are doing this style of earphone now, but AT’s look the coolest.
I highly recommend trying out the Porta Pros if you can, even for people just looking for headphones. I’ve tried dozens upon dozens of headphones and earbuds, etc., and I’ve always come back to the Porta Pros.

I love these little Panasonic earbuds and have been buying them for over a decade; much sturdier cord seating than I’ve had in any other earbud and really nice sound if you get a good seal. Comes with 3 sizes of rubber gaskets.

they’re $70 here but the dollar values for everything are doubled and for the lifetime warranty that still strikes me as decent value
if you have a huge head though be wary, i wore mine in eventually and can wear them for like an hour without headache now but it took a minute

best i did was:
i cant tell if someone has redrawn the obscured parts or not …
(edit: thinking about it, i think this picture appeared in a magazine, and someone has turned the background blue to use as an avatar or something. the places where they have missed filling in are white not the brown colours in the advert image. also the text is just “shirow masamune” and the line off to the right seems like it could be a magazine layout.
so i think this image was supplied as press material when the game was coming out (???) )
