Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

I’m not going to correct that typo

Also if the game appeared in the Polygon top 100 it should have to earn at least 66% of the vote to advance

I think a group list-creation exercise could produce an interesting list if there were a bunch of weird criteria attached to what and how you went about making your own lists. Like one could be “you first played it as a kid” or “you played it with friends despite there being no actual co-op mode”. Come up with a couple dozen or so of those and then make a rule that everyone’s picks have to satisfy X number of those conditions to be considered for the final list.

I don’t know. Might make everything more interesting and produce a top 100 list that stands out a bit more.

What was the absurd bracket @jsnlv made for SB1? Was that even IC days.

@username can’t believe you are so old school you brought up that fucking ski free incident.

Like I’ve said before, I lurked a long ass time before bothering to start posting myself.

It was definitely SB1 era. All I did on Insert Credit was get into pointless arguments (thus, my contrarian username “intentionally wrong”) and sneer at the Axe.

I was getting really into voting systems at the time, and CGP Grey’s voting videos on youtube started showing up around 9 years ago, which puts this probably in the 2011 or 2012 range, I think? I could probably find the original thread with a bit more time, but basically I asked people to list their top X games (10 games? 25 games?) and weighted their votes if they ranked them, then used an approval voting-style scoring system to find the top 25 overall.

I actually tried to do another instance of that in 2016 here on SB2, and I even got y’all to provide a bunch of responses, but I wanted to use Google Forms or Sheets or something to make the process easier, which itself made the project so much harder that it never happened.

Not in any way.

Have each person submit an unordered top 10, strike any game that gets >n nominations, put the rest in the bracket

you all want to be contrarian so bad but you won’t admit dark souls 2 was the only good dark souls. you want the juice but you don’t want to bruise the fruit

I liked it when we attempted to poll our besties for each year because 1998 was the showdown of all time

Oh boy, I started lurking around the time of that SB1 sacred cows list. It’s a good list and I wonder how different a new one will be? I kinda agree with the idea that these big consensus exercises don’t offer much substance when there’s a lot of well articulated analysis going on (about open world/metroidvania, To the Moon/fan writing, whatever off the top of my head recently). Ranking is still fun to watch play out though!

Random idea for whatever it’s worth: Framing things with a dozen or so categories. Best Hangout Game. Best Flying Game. Best Written Game. Best Multiplayer. Best Open World. Almost stupidly broad categories that would facilitate a discussion and having to defend one’s picks (maybe even selling people on certain games).

I personally dislike the big consensus lists because they turn into a flattening of taste that makes selectbutton seem no different from polygon.

I place way more value in people’s personal best game lists or worst game lists. Canons and counter-canons, not just ranked choice lists of works that everyone agrees are good.

All entries must be in the grotesque games thread.

Top 100 Games With Really Tall Towers

has no one posted Phantasmagoria in the grotesque games thread?

it could be argued that sb is defined by the “lines”, so you actually want the most divisive games.

so each game gets a poll with good/bad/don’t care

score is: good - (size of difference between good and bad) - don’t care

or something idk

I third nettle’s suggestion

G-|G-B|-N=G+/-(G-B)-N
         =2G-B-N for G>B
           OR
         =B-N for G<=B

I can’t really visualize math from a screen, but I think this rates

great games>awful games>polarizing games>meh games

…which seems very Selectbutton.

i’m not sure how you get 2G? i’d intended the part in brackets to always be >= 0, so any positive value there took away from the total score.
