Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

scholar of the first sin

scholar is itself kinda that and ds2 is the only one that makes any substantial changes in NG+. not a lot, unfortunately, but what’s there is neat. You get jumped by enemies at the beginning, the lost sinner boss gets 2 tough adds partway thru, theres an early surprise appearance by freyja in brightstone, etc.

RE2 original has the B scenario for each character, which forces you down a different path and puts Mr. X in the game to harangue you from time to time

RE1 director’s cut had an “arrange” mode which was slightly harder and moved locations of key items around. its character options are very lightly this because Chris has to find keys to get around some obstacles whereas Jill is the master of unlocking

SMB1 has kind of a proto version. beating it makes enemies move faster and turns all goombas into buzzy beetles

maybe not quite what you’re after but bloodlines unlocks and puts you on ‘expert mode’ after one playthrough

the normal difficulty in the japanese version is slightly toned down (though tcrf erroneously says it’s equivalent to ‘easy’ in the western release) so expert feels significantly different re: enemy placement etc.

The closest I can come up with is the Zangyou mode of Kero Blaster.

I think there’s a version of Tower of Druaga that has a second quest.

the arcade version of rodland has two different sets of stages, chosen with a dip switch, iirc. though i don’t know if there’s a difference in difficulty between them.

does anybody know stuff about usb microphones?

i am thinking of upgrading from my built in microphone for job related stuff. it seems like something called ‘blue yeti’ is the kind of standard choice, it costs like 180 (canadian) bucks.

does anybody know of something that would be significantly cheaper and not a huge drop in quality? i’m not making a podcast here, but would like something that sounded better than a macbook built in mic.

bonus points if it is something that is actually regularly in stock at normal places.

THe Blue Snowball is a pretty decent mic that is cheaper than the Yeti. If you can find one, they are usually around 50 bucks (US) during normal times. The problem you are going to run into right now is that everyone is buying USB mics because of working from home and specifically the school year coming up.

yeah i thought that might be an issue haha! i am definitely moving with the herd on this one. thanks for the rec though

I got a yeti nano for like $100 canadian back in april(?), see if you can hunt around. I pretty much exclusively use craigslist for consumer electronics stuff at this point because vancouver is a big enough city and I get annoyed about the exchange rate otherwise

Yeah, I am seeing some Blue Snowballs in stock at Targets/Best Buys around here for 50, so hopefully you can find one where you are.

can vouch for Blue Snowballs being perfectly fine for all uses except “i need a very high-end mic for my professional podcast”

The quality of mine’s been great since I added my like, folding podcast stand.

I’ve had my blue yeti for 6 years and it hasn’t failed me after being stored in the same cardboard box that’s been in my wet car, storage lockers, and basements.

What’s the best way to make a backup of my Windows 10 PC and files? I have a 500GB SSD, a 2TB external, and an empty 5TB external.

it worked great, but a mismatched sample rate (i think) left the other person’s voice sounding like a chipmunk and i think i gotta re-record an hour long podcast somehow

Yeah sample rates are weird as heck sometimes.

yeah, it totally screwed me on this one. i have no idea what to do and re-recording isn’t an option.

Release as is? See if you can downtune the other person a bit in audacity?

I’ve been trying that all weekend so far, and it’s basically impossible to get them to a place where they sound like they can be listened too. I’ve looked up a dozen of tutorials on how to change sampling rates, and it seems like for whatever reason they’re all decade old tutorials and most audio software (i ran it through three different programs today) have completely dummied out all of the fixes I need
