Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

Anyone ever replace the screen on an iPhone? My 8 Plus is now smashed to hell and I want to fix it at the lowest possible cost but I also don’t want to work hard or study more than is needed. Is it very hard??

the pre-X’s are pretty easy to do on your own if you have a clean room or you’re good at making your bathroom into one

if not I would just pay someone for it

What’s the state of Nintendo DS emulation? There are games I might want to try before I die but I don’t think I want to hang on to the hardware for 10 more years or spend money

DeSmuME always worked well for everything I tried for the most part.

it’s pretty good on PC, most stuff runs well.

as an aside: if you already have a wii u, the DS VC injects are actually pretty compelling (due to the wii u gamepad being a touch device and the system supporting dual screens and multiple other useful configurations).

that said, on PC you can get upscaling and stuff (there’s a tiny bit of this on wii u but it isn’t robust)

Are DS’s not cheap as heck in the states?

I got a new flash cart from aliexpress for like 18 bucks and it works better than my DSLite really.

I mean I own a 3DS, I just sort of like the idea of having fewer devices in general

3DS with custom firmware can play DS games

I suppose that’s also an option, although I’m a weirdo and divesting myself of belongings really gives me a nice burst of satisfaction. Somehow I can only give myself permission to own a few dedicated gaming devices at a time.

My thing nowadays is I can’t seem to find an actual comfortable posture to play handhelds anymore it seems. So despite having a perfectly functional DS lite I still just emulate everything.

lay with your back on the floor and your ass and legs flat up against the wall (like the letter L).

Don’t your arms get tired?

why would they get tired when they’re being supported by the floor they’re resting on?

ooooh, i had them straight up so my neck was in a neutral position. your way is more sensible, it just strains my old stiff neck.

i like to get comfy when i play handhelds so whenever i get really into a handheld game im like bedridden for a week. i did play most of dq5 lounging on a huge pile of pillows tho

where should i start with king’s field

If I was grabbing game magazines from
archive what format should I be using in 2020?

1j is kind of different, more like a translation of a certain dungeon crawling mindset to 3d. slower, grindier, and less sprawling, but still worth playing for the technical and atmospheric accomplishments
2j is the best entry point and the best game in the series
3j is one of the most underrated games i know of! it has very obvious flaws but its strengths are nearly entirely unrepresented in other games
4 is quite good. most consider the best in the series. it has fantastic music and graphics but is slow as dogshit and frequently very frustrating to actually play. the combat is much more difficult. the world design is very good. it has nothing to do with the narrative of 1-3 so don’t worry about that.

shadow tower is just as good as 2j, maybe better

worth noting that every KF game has incredible music. 1j would be worth playing for the music alone

seconding kf1 west/kf2 jp, shadow tower 1 and kf4 as the three best starting points. shadow tower is my favorite but it’s not technically a mainline king’s field game.
