god of war is strenuously fine, like spiderman and horizon
Seconding Until Dawn. It’s the closest thing to an interactive horror movie.
I thought PS2 Shinobi had a really strong first half that the second couldn’t quite live up to. Still definitely worth checking out. Also the camera moves the wrong way and there is no in-game way to fix it, so I ran it on an emulator and reversed the right stick to fix it.
In terms of PS4 games, The Last Guardian is flawed as hell but I unabashedly love it. God of War was legit pretty great, I am a low voter of Bloodborne but that still means I consider it to be rather good, and Spider-man somehow nailed the narrative in an open world game which is rather tricky (game itself is rather good if unessential). Uncharted 4 is better than Uncharted 3 if you wanted more of those games. I still have yet to try Gravity Rush 2. The Ratchet & Clank reboot is… a game that exists if you really really wanted to play another one of those.
oh yeah the gravity rush games, i’m curious about them too
Gravity Rush is Vita and PS4 only.
Deracine is PSVR and move controllers only.
Judgement! I came around it. Also lots of Yakuza.
Gravity Rush is coollllll
Sekiro y’all.
I enjoyed Gravity Rush 1 despite it having highly frustrating combat (homing kick, your go to move, regularly misses if you don’t line it up just right or have enough momentum). Flying (falling?) around a city is extremely well-executed in both games and easily the highlight.
I may be insane but I played Gravity Rush 2 and absolutely hated it. The combat doesn’t improve much but the biggest problem I had was that the game’s narrative feels unfocused and is far too long for what it is. The plot throws you all over the place which I normally don’t mind but the core gameplay doesn’t really change enough across a long playtime to make it feel worth it. For a game that introduces so many ideas it just felt like it was endlessly padding itself with little payoff. I would try Gravity Rush 1 and see how strongly you feel. If you play 2 and feel like dropping off after a while I don’t think you’re missing much.
Both have great music.
Gravity Rush 2 is a total mess. all the improvements to combat are excessive, and it ends up like the first game where a single move is OP, but it’s a far less satisfying move than in the first game.
the story is so long but also impossible to follow without watching the anime short set between the games. this is the sort of bullshit i would normally think is cool, but it’s not like the game uses this in an interesting way. they could have made this really dense thing, but it’s just really tropey and inscrutable.
the good parts of the game were really good though. it looks incredible and the online features were really rad. treasure hunting was a lot of fun and really highlighted how good the visual design is. the servers have now been shut down.
I love Gravity Rush 2 despite its faults, it’s at least worth it just as a game to move around in like you’re a 5 years old kid playing a videogame for the first time
Death Stranding is still a (very good) exclusive for a few months
the gravity rush 2 demo is more essential than the game
Wattam is no Katamari but I would count it as the second most important PS4 exclusive behind Bloodborne.
it’s on Epic
damn i feel like katamari just looms larger and larger as the years go by
which i guess is appropriate
Man, I really underestimated how much EVERYTHING gets ported these days. I’m pretty OK with that though!
i mean tbh once i wean myself off of deeply personal picks like king’s field and shadow tower and as long as i don’t think about minecraft too much i still think the first katamari is like
the best video game?
everything about it is great in all the ways video games should be great, and it transcends being “just a toy” as well
also underrated in its depiction of preposterous masculinity, it’s not the first thing people ever bring up about it but it’s like a barthelme story it’s so good
Katamari is the game people should’ve recommended to Ebert. Instantly understandable.
But it isn’t overtly brooding and is in fact somewhat childlike in its poppy colorful aesthetic? How will anyone every legitimate games as an art form if they’re not Serious?
everybody’s golf on the ps4 is an ok everybody’s golf
unfortunately they patched the character creator so you can no longer make one-eyed witches, and it takes too long to win things in and getting the best possible clubs requires a large amount of repetitive work or use of micro-transactions and what kind of arsehole puts microtransactions in everybody’s golf? but if somehow you can ignore all that it’s… everybody’s golf on the ps4.
