whoops, deleted my post by mistake… but is it possible to revert deletion? (also useful for the future)

Like as a pejorative? Or analogy?

The better term to describe ā€œautisticā€ behavior is stereotyped, if that helps.

Yeah sorry if I’m mishandling this question, or being unclear. I am interested in its pejorative usage I think. I am thinking that there is a kind of style of play, or there are really intense interests that players can exhibit as they play which are worth talking about, and which are usually the thing being described by people when they call a thing autistic. So I am interested in looking at the thing being described.

Oh, no worries. It’s channer shit I’m fairly certain. Haven’t come across any writing on it but I’d use 4chan as a search term if I wanted to look up the pejorative usage but I super don’t lol

I think you’re right, the first time I remember it ever being evoked was around the Minecraft alpha on 4chan. Guess I’ll be diving into the nasty archives!

Just speaking personally there are definitely games that feel designed by and/or for autistic people — emphasizing or simulating system optimizing, pattern recognition, memorization, etc. but I usually keep that generalization to myself and say I really like it, it’s made for me.

Then there’s Sonic. Working on piecing apart that one.

This is a sentiment I’ve heard other autistic people express, and I think both parts of it (the idea/keeping the generalization to yourself) totally make sense! I appreciate you sharing it with me!

is Robotrek (SNES) worth checking out?

I played it for like 3 hours a decade ago so take this with a grain of salt, but I remember it as one of those games where the design doesn’t really deliver on the cheerful adventure promised by the artwork. There was something off about the narrative pacing and the core RPG loop and it actively required willpower to keep playing.

I also haven’t played it in forever but found it charming. There’s some 90s Ā« holy shit! 2 Mo of data!! Ā». Robot customization is fun and the pixel art, as usual with late SNES RPG, is great. Opening up those spherical chests felt great

It’s held back by an awful OST with maybe the genre worst battle track, obscure progression flags IIRC, Q U I N T E T F O N T (again IIRC) and probably not the best translation

I loved it back when it was first released, but I remember being kind of bummed that the best strategy seemed to be to dump all your upgrades into your main robot. The backup ones seldom seemed needed.

Does there exist a modern equivalent of the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset? I miss that thing. Preferably either directly Xbox One wirelessly compatible (so I can pair it with the same adapter I use for the controller) or, I guess, in a pinch, Bluetooth.

Seemingly everything is some big on-ear stereo headset these days, and I don’t need that, I’d much rather use my audio system. And it sounds like the Hyperkin one is typical Hyperkin quality, so not that one.

I remain a couch gamer and the options for party chat are weird in 2021 - today I played some Halo with friends by pairing my headphones with a Genki Bluetooth adapter (to avoid Windows’ crummy Bluetooth stack entirely), and using the Genki’s microphone directly on my Xbox One controller, which meant my voice was faint unless I was talking at my lap, where the controller is. lol

I have had decent luck with ā€œtrucker headsetsā€, which are kinda like bluetooth versions of the original 360 pack in microphone. Used one to play MonHun with friends on PS4 and it worked well enough.

I’ve had good luck using a webcam as a mic at 2-3 feet from my face. It’s designed for room pickup so it’s happy to do that but if you’re in a noisy environment you’ll get background pickup too unless you have a filter on.

I use airpod pros in one ear because I love that they automatically downmix stereo if you leave one in the case but they aren’t worth buying for use with windows only

maybe I’ll tell this to my spouse after one airpod fell out her ear and then down an elevator shaft

if you get the pros you get another point in luck on your character for things like that
