Ah, I kind of thought that a software solution would exist by now. I probably wanted to own the thing out of a misguided sense of prestige, anyways.
Can anyone think of any cool writing about the PS2 Grand Theft Auto games? I’m looking to immerse myself in the ways people talked about those games and their cities and their ambiance as a way to think about what it means to have those experiences classified as the not definitive thing with these upcoming remasters.
We’ve all played some of those games where you invest your profits from trading or piracy into upgrading your ship. What’s the genre called? And did the space-themed version or sailing-themed version come first?
The original game that really kicked the genre off was Space Trader, written in BASIC in 1973, and the mechanics were all just jumping between systems buying and selling six different commodities. The source code was printed in several magazines in the 70s, meaning it was easy enough for people to create their own versions/improvements.
Two of the biggest games that came out of it were Elite and Trade Wars, both in 1984, the former introducing 3D, a much larger open world, and more of a role-playing aspect, whereas the latter was more like the original game, just with a lot more going on, including combat, the ability to buy better ships, to upgrade your ships, and the ability to be played online with multiple other users.
The genre name that people seem to have agreed on so far is “space trader”.

I just figured out that one I played back in the nineties that I couldn’t remember the name of was High Seas Trader. Wikipedia says it’s in the genre “business simulation”. It’s the same thing mechanically so it seems a bit unfortunate the conventional name locks in a setting

Not exactly what you asked for, but I found a curious snapshot of the discourse surrounding GTA in those days (check especially the comments section)
It reminds me that the experience was inseparable from its aura of edginess and controversy. I suspect those aspects of the games will be the ones that have aged the worst

I always heard it as “space trading and combat sim” to distinguish Elitelikes from “space combat sim” which is Wing Commanderlikes. All big mouthfuls, bad labels

Where do I buy Steam Keys that isn’t Steam and is also reputable? I kinda wanna get Dark Souls 3 on PC but I’m looking to spend $15 and not $80.
the only other site I’ve used with any regularity when I don’t feel like pirating something and I’m unhappy with the steam price is GMG, they have been good to me
