Has anybody played A Hat in Time?
How good is it?
Hot Shots Golf Fore!
its ok, has good controls and some cool stuff. writing can get a lil annoying tho, and i hated the music festival level
Incoherent world design and writing. The character movement itself is really great.
Anyone play Eastward yet? My GF is hype for it because itâs by the Stardew Valley people. Looks pretty nice, some of the most extreme Mother 3 energy Iâve seen a game reach for in a while.
It is good.
Played through the beginning and I think it earns its tone. Art is a main draw but this isnât Owlboy. I donât think it shares any people between Stardew Valley besides a publisher doing the marketing.
Could you elaborate a bit regarding the incoherent world design? Thanks!
The first world is an Mediterranean Seaside town where American style Italian-Maifosos run a seafood restaurant.
The second world is a Scottish Owl and Disco Cats are competing to make a western and musical film.
Your rival has a moustache and there are numerous jokes that are Look Moustache like it is a joke.
Itâs been a minute but Iâd hesitate to even use the word âworld designâ because the game felt like a series of set pieces smashed together in a way that doesnât quite gel (which makes sense as an indie/Kickstarter thing from (I think) a somewhat geographically separated group of developers). Aside from the hub world, I donât remember any detailed open levels to explore and uncover but more conceptually-driven missions: sneak through a haunted house without being caught by a ghoul, rush to the engine room of a rapidly disintegrating train, sneak (again) through the high security lair of a disco-loving penguinâŚyeah, the humour didnât work for me, very schlocky 90s 3D platformer Youtuber fan service stuff.
But your mileage may vary. The character movement is pretty solid, nothing on Mario but maybe a bit more nuanced and pleasing physics-wise than say Banjo-Kazooie or Yooka-Laylee. Movement aside, it gave me some serious Mario Sunshine vibes with its âletâs throw everything against the wallâ approach which could just as easily be perceived as a crisis of identity but isnât without its charms. For me, it didnât have the right combination of action or exploration. There are Odyssey/Sunshine-like obstacle course stages abstracted from the actual âworldsâ, and thatâs cool, but ultimately it wasnât enough to keep me engaged and I bailed about halfway through.
I suggest watching a trailer and some videos and seeing whether the personality of the game vibes with you because thatâs what it falls back on more than hardcore platforming or environmental investigation (and the sense of self-discovery/mastery that come with those things).
Thanks! Very clear explanation.
Are there any other, more interesting platformers I could check out?
I have played the 3D Marios (I like 3D Land and 3D World the best; Odyssey is very boring, apart from a couple inspired levels, while I have problems with Mario 64 camera in 2021)⌠but I donât have much experience with other non-Mario 3D platformer games.
rayman 2: the great escape (pc version)
very slight in comparison to most 3D platformers but i enjoyed it a lot and itâs cheap
@Felix approved Grow Home.
To be fair I think the movement in A Hat In Time was really good justâŚany consideration of the world was a headache.
Crackdown is a 3D platformer in my book and it rocks. Still free to download on XBox 360/One!
Do we have a cars talk/stuff thread?
