I don’t have a name for it (dungeon shooters?), but those Japanese shooters from the PSX’s early days are distinctly different from Western ones; they seem barely influenced by Doom or even Wolfenstein level design concepts, favoring Wizardry-style hallways and node rooms, which unfortunately makes the shooting pretty limited. Usually the player has full control over the room door so combat is popping aggression in a room and backing into the hallway.

I think the best ones are the second wave; Crime Crackers 2 and Epidemic/Kileak 2.

Epidemic is good, notably because it has a more wolf3d style level design (and certain control improvements). Much more tabletop dungeon layouts rather than the ‘early videogame dungeon’ layouts of Kileak 1. I enjoyed uncovering the relatively convoluted secrets in the first few stages

Always found Kileak unplayable because of the death timer, which I guess is a holdover from old dungeon crawlers with Food timers or whatever. It’s stressful enough in a tile/turn-based game, but at least you can stop and think. Can’t handle it in a purely realtime game

anyone played that atelier ryza? i been enjoyin tf out of xenoblade chronicles x atm because of its supreme hangout quality and kinda delightfully stupid combat (not to mention that jump!) and i’m on the lookout for similar stuff. ryza is 45% off for the next week and i’ve had my eye on it for a while. that and tales of vesperia, which is 75% off (20 bucks!). i suspect the actual answer is that there is nothing else like xcx and i should just wait until the xenoblade remake is on sale (or play the 3ds copy that i already own!!!) but i’m still curious.

Maybe Ys VIII or IX?

i also own ys 8 lol. it’s p good, but i bounced off it after about 5 or 6 hours fsr, and i really don’t know why! maybe it’s because it’s more anime than xcx, or because its world is a little more rigid and generic, or because the combat just feels a bit insufficient for the enemies you face, idk. nostrum looks chill as, with all the climbing and the gothic aesthetic, and it’s on my wishlist, but i kinda feel like i should put a few more hours into 8 before i commit to 9.

Zach play ys 8 you bitch. It’s better than xenoblade chronicles non-x edition and whatever atelier ryza is (will not be googling). Find me at the kitchen table if u wanna fight about it

cant speak for ryza but vesperia is not good, strongly anti-recommend. the other xenoblades are also hangouty but have much worse jumps (and fall damage :X ). i like 2 more than 1 bc it has tighter combat richer towns and louder secret locations but it also has significantly more anime tax so… idk. but if you can countenance playing an atelier game i reckon you could handle it. the standalone expansion is also (mostly) good and notable for being a complete xenoblade experience in a third of the playtime!!!

ig if the rubric here is “robust environment design and popping candy combat” dragons dogma is the first thing that comes to mind for me. i think i valued the last remnant in some of the ways i valued x personally similar - they both have pretty robust webs of sidequests that open up the games in surprising ways & they both get a lot out of a few town environments. and ys 8!!! “games like and as good as xenoblade x” is such a hard but important question to answer…

Ryza is fine enough, though I wouldn’t say it’s anything at all like Xenoblade Chronicles. It’s got some chill hangout vibes, but it’s mostly pretty linear as I recall, at least until later when the world opens up a bit. The combat feels kinda chaotic (it’s sort of ATB style) and the alchemy is a bit basic in the early stages, but they both sort of come together better in the end. The plot is pretty bland and mundane, and you’ll spend a good chunk of the game just going to and from event markers and watching cutscenes.

What is the nicest gameboy clone I can buy, presuming that I can throw the whole romset on there and leave in my nightstand?

probably the analogue pocket but learning how well it handles roms from the SD card and all that has been delayed
