i don’t know if four years old counts as recent but i do like Prey (2017) a lot and think it looks quite good even though i’ve been very slow to play through it. also very much looking forward to Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo when they come out (the first much sooner i guess).

and very much get on that Humble Bundle right now with Hitman 1+2 and a few other things for 12$ if you wanna play it.

GTA Online with modz.

is hitman 3 ever going to show up on steam, is that a year long exclusive deal?

(not out of any kind of Store Loyalty btw, i just don’t reaaaally want to install 2 again just for the purposes of logging in to the eidos thing to transfer data)

The launch blog post said 12 months exclusive, so it should be on steam in Jan/feb 2022.

i just thought about kickstarter for the first time in a while and now i’m wondering is that ā€œmomentā€ over? or have i just been out of the loop on it for a bit?

cuz for a while there was this massive fervour like THIS IS IT, THEY’VE DONE IT, FINALLY THE THING THAT WILL BRING BACK OUR CHILDHOODS

I think that still happens.

This is the most recent games-related KS that I’ve ran across on my social media feeds:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gbproductivity/gb-productivity-suite?ref=discovery_category_newest

no idea if this is representative of the current moment, but it sure (maybe) says something about the state of things

I assume actual KS campaigns still happen for games (I swear I’ve seen some recently), but enough folks have been burned by promising pitches that I don’t think it will ever hold the same cultural cachet that it did 8 years ago or whenever.

Boyfriend Dungeon came out last month and was on Kickstarter in 2018.

I think the multimillion dollar revivals are dying down now that [checks notes] Microsoft bought Obsidian, InXile, and Double Fine. Shenmue 3 also took the shine off by pulling the curtain back on the reality of funding 3D work.

I just checked and the Homestuck game is still kicking, hoo boy

the development of the homestuck game is such a remarkable example of hussie proving that he’s the worst boss and should never run any projects

Kickstarter better not be over cuz I dunno how else I’m gonna pay off this hoverboat I ordered yesterday

Kickstarters have settled into being an important marketing and proving channel for games, and a funding source for very small (<$50k) projects. Running a Kickstarter can be a good pre-Early Access test of a game’s viability, and small publishers often ask for it or it’s used to secure a publishing contract with more (realistic) funding.

I think we’ll still see sporadic nostalgia brand revival mega-Kickstarters but they’re mostly mined out.

I helped Kickstart a visual novel this year! I guess they are still happening.

Matt Colville for example who runs a successful small tabletop gaming company after a wildly successful initial KS basically uses it now as a preorder system. Like he could just build a website to collect money for preorders for a future book but instead he uses KS for that.

Has anyone actually played World of Tanks/Ships/Onnaholes or does it exist in some void played by people making gacha pulls somewhere.
