Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

Thanks! Then Stalker will have the priority for me

Does anyone have recommendations on fun 2+ player board/card games, preferably co-op? Trying to find games to play with my partner in our never ending Ontario lockdown.

Everything by Oink Games is supposed to be good.

Jaipurā€™s a great 2-player-only game but itā€™s not coop. Gloomhaven is very good at 2 players, coop, but a heavy game rules wise. Probably pursue that cheaper target edition instead of the full big box. Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is really cool and will last you quite a while, but the scoring mechanics are busted and best ignored.

Exceed and Battlecon are both not co-op games but they are excellent adaptations of arcade fighting games.

Oh yeah, there are tons of cheap 10 dollar ā€˜escape room in a boxā€™ games, and Iā€™ve heard the highest recommendations for the Exit: the Game series, but I havenā€™t played any of them yet. These games can only be played once.

OH! Duh, how could I forget Pandemic: Legacy. Thereā€™s a coop game that works GREAT with 2 players and will last you a long while.

Yeah Iā€™ve done a few of these and as long as you donā€™t mind that they are a one time thing, they are pretty enjoyable for a bit. The times I have played them have been with larger groups, where we have two of them and split into teams and then trade afterwards, so we make it a slight competition, but nothing mean. Itā€™s neat to see where different teams get slowed down. Obviously not a thing for two people, but fun nonetheless.

i kind of want to recommend Netrunner but thatā€™sā€¦a bit of a rabbit hole

Ravens of Thri Sahashri is a cool asymmetric co-op game with a communicate-secrets-by-playing-cards concept, and interesting pacing that starts contemplative and gets rapid in the endgame (as the ā€œsleepingā€ player metaphorically awakens).

I wish I knew how to teach netrunner better? or at least knew decks that were specifically made so that nika can do the thing she likes to do in games which is make too much money

dont play pandemic it will make you hate whoever figures out everything first and if thatā€™s you prepare to be hated

it is a one player game in disguise

i dunno how much legacy fixes this, ive only played risk legacy and every rule change someone added they just made the game go faster because ugh risk

Legacy fixes it, thatā€™s why I recommended that and not vanilla pandemic.

I would say that Pandemic Legacy still has that problem to a certain extent, but yeah, not as badly as the original game. That issue of one player commanding the others can happen with pretty much any co-op game though, itā€™s insidious.

Iā€™m going to put in a strong recommendation for Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion. Thatā€™s the smaller one they sell at Target which Tulpa mentioned earlier. Itā€™s easier to learn than the original Gloomhaven and much cheaper. My partner and I have been playing it over the past several months and had a lot of fun with it. Itā€™s tough enough to really chew on as youā€™re playing it, but itā€™s not too brain-burning. You can still put on some jazz and have a nice, mostly relaxed time with it.

The Arkham Horror Card Game is supposedly excellent for 2-player co-op. We played one session of it and found the rules very unintuitive to the point that we didnā€™t really want to pick it up again, so your mileage may vary.

Yeah I hated the Arkham horror card game. It just felt really arbitrary and complicated for a game thatā€™s basically just rolling some dice and reading a card.

I like the Arkham Horror Card Game! The rules are terribly explained in the rulebook, but thereā€™s no dice in the game anyway, itā€™s pulling tokens from a bag (and you can just adjust them to your preferred level of randomness. Since I prefer low randomness, I play on that easy difficulty because thatā€™s the only thing difficulty changes)

Anyway, itā€™s cool how it has the close narrative focus and long term character growth embedded in a card game; deckbuilding as a level up mechanic is cool, and the fact that deckbuilding is scenario dependent is extra cool, so the cards that make up your deck define your characterā€™s history.

yeah I do like the deckbuilding between rounds a lot and I usually hate deckbuilding mechanics

also you can play 3p by buying just the base game and one expansion

I was unimpressed by the setup complexity and the booster pack pricing though

It has all the flaws of a fantasy flight game but also many of the benefits. They habitually made good games with godawful rulebooks.

Still, because of who I am, I prepped all the adventure decks before playing so set up was remarkably minimal for me for the core game.

i was gonna say netrunner too (because thatā€™s what i play), the new nisei pack is a really really good teaching tool, pre built decks that work well together and make it more of a board game. System Gateway - Null Signal Games

anyone have any experience with the hardware of Famicom Disk System?

i recently picked one up to use with my NT Mini Noir, and iā€™m running into an issue. basically, it loads up the FDS title screen, asks for a disk, and when i insert the disk, everything boots up, etc., but then the game itself seems to be unable to load properly. the disk is some Konami game that the seller just gave to me on an unmarked disk. sometimes i can get to the title screen, sometimes i can even load up the save files, but once i try to actually load one of the files, it either freezes on ā€œNow Loadingā€ or the screen just becomes garbage, like if you had a problem with a cartridge where the pins donā€™t connect properly (i.e. numbers or grey screen or messed up graphics that hang).

my guess is that itā€™s just the disk itself that has the issue, and i need to wait for another FDS game to arrive that i purchased to see if itā€™s the system or the disk itself, but yeahā€¦really hard to find any reliable info or troubleshooting on the FDS on the English-speaking internet!

have you looked at https://www.reddit.com/r/AnalogueInc/comments/k3h3tx/issue_when_using_famicom_disk_system_with_noir/

yeah, itā€™s not that, sadly. i have it hooked up to a CRT via S-Video and the settings are already Fully Buffered and HDMI output is disabled
