Sadly, they list it as Not Available. Looks like it’s generally around $40-50 on Ebay, which I guess could be worse. Would rather download it though if there’s some trick to do so.
acfa is not on psn, unfortunately. disc is probably cheaper if you have a 360? note that while you can emulate acfa okay, and it feels great running smoothly (current pc isn’t good enough but a friend played the whole game that way), it does have some graphical issues during certain missions that can make it difficult to play (blindingly bright beyond even the intended bloom dunk of the original, impossible to see targets). it’s still worth trying out if you have good enough hardware, though.

How is Baten Kaitos from the Gamecube? I never tried the series and I have no idea… Would it hold up nowadays?
This is going to be of no use to you but I want to remind everyone that I once got a JP version of Baten Kaitos for GameCube sent to me from our one time forum nemesis, whose name starts with icy. He said if someone can explain something to him (something that I long forgot) then he’ll send them the game and I was able to explain it to him. It was something like “why is Capcom doing this” and I said something like “money” or whatever. The address he sent it to doesn’t exist anymore as the house has been sold and demolished recently and I finally feel closure. I don’t know what happened to the copy of Baten Kaitos; I never played it

I really liked it when I played it at the time of release. I can’t think of anything that would make it not hold up in 2021. If I got into GameCube emulation that’s probably a game I’d put on my list.

It’s good! I ran into emulation issues so I still haven’t finished it, but I like it a lot. Very pretty, great music, laughable voice acting.

The one I have is “Baten Kaitos Origins”. Should I play this one? The one that came before it? Both?
I haven’t played Origins. I think it streamlined the mechanics somewhat. If I recall, I passed on it at time of release because it seemed like it would be less interesting.
Plus the first game just had some really gonzo plot stuff that is a real highlight. Can’t speak to the story of the prequel

All I remember from Baten Kaitos is that your cards can age, so if you keep a milk card for a while it will turn into a cheese card. It was hilarious. If you keep your fish card too long it will turn into a disgusting rotten fish card and you won’t be able to finish your sidequest
IIRC the game was good but, like many of its contemporaries, very slow

yeah the main draw of Baten Kaitos is the weird real-time stuff. It has more effect on battles than you might think at first.

This is definitely true, but the battle system requires enough thought that you can’t simply turn the brain off and smash A. This might actually be a bad thing for some folks!!
I personally like the specific friction of battles in this game, although I do tend to avoid them once I’ve gotten what I needed. They do take fricking forever
I’m guessing you’ve already tried this but text like that is usually fixed by changing your system locale to the appropriate language of the game? I know I once had to have the appropriate system locale set even when unzipping the zip file for it to work right so you may have to reinstall it?
changing the locale, resetting the computer, then deleting and re-installing the game did it, thanks!
insane how after all these decades they don’t just have windows computers able to do this by default. maybe there’s someone out there who really has a need for japanese to be displayed as wibbly bibbly schmibbly by default
