Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

dragon quest dai no daibouken is one of those anime that’s incredibly popular in the middle east. there was even a game show based on it?

i’ve seen the panzer dragoon oav at least twice and remember nothing about it

right, hence ‘earlier production materials’ the anime was itself basically independent of the game and the major difference between them can be felt from how konaka was much more involved in the narrative of the anime than of the game.

I’m exactly the opposite and probably the conventional take, that the game is an interesting historical oddity that’s a nice supplement to the real meat and potatoes of the anime.

looking forward to the release of the new english hack being developed for the psx game with subtitles/original ui/new translation so we can all play it and argue about this

oh I think its super cool, don’t get me wrong, but SEL is one of my all time favorite animes so its always going to be judged in comparison

Yeah, the fact that I couldn’t remember if it was too long or too short probably says it all. I looked it up it’s less than half an hour!

It feels like it’s about 3 hours long

I guess the other question I should have asked was do you need to play AC4 to enjoy For Answer.

Definitely not imo (having only played For Answer). If you’ve played Demon’s Souls though it’s fun to see some of that game’s spirit here or maybe I’m reading into it too much. Thinking about the bombastic grim intro movie, the stats/gear levelling and the character bio + concept art loading screens.

4 is worth going back to for how it leads into FA narratively but the latter is the better game and you can absolutely play it on its own. and yeah it’s an extremely miyazaki project, it really speaks to the myopic conservativism of dark souls fans that they’ll spend a decade making lore theorycrafting youtube videos but never bother looking into the other games their favorite director led, or the body of work from which they developed. just from googling i haven’t found any discussion of acfa w/r/t miyazaki at all, which is kind of incredible. it’s on his wikipedia page!

I feel this would require time machine to go back to 1995 and get id to fund a properly hyperviolent OVA of the time for this to really work.

Get the MD Geist people on it

is there a way I can look at/copy etc ps2 memory card information on a pc. some sort of adapter thing I can buy?

There’s a now obscenely expensive PS3-era first party USB adapter (model CECHZM1), intended for use with PS1 and PS2 games on the PS3. It can be made to work on a PC but the software (ps3mca-tool) got taken down from GitHub via DMCA for having a Sony employee leak the MagicGate encryption keys, without which interacting with the card is impossible.

Copies of the software are still around but the reader is regularly $60+ dollars on eBay.

If I’m curious to try one of them, should I play Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2? And then, should I play the EE version NWN1?

NWN1, and only custom modules. Main campaigns of both games are dreadful and the only way to appreciate NWN1 is through what the community made for it.

EE version requires a bit less set up but it also might throw up errors with a few modules.

Hmm, playing just custom modules sounds cool! How should I go about selecting them? I might pick up the EE version cause it’s cheap and I’m interested in those kinds of projects, but from what I am reading the support for old modules is pretty solid.

I have a lot of recommendations if you’re interested in my take but I think an easy first recommendation is elegia eternum and its sequel.

They’re short-ish planescape torment influenced character driven modules that easily demonstrate the finer qualities of community stuff

I’ll draw together a larger list of modules soon

Thanks Tulpa. I’ll try out elegia eternum then.

do you have a dvd burner or a freemcboot memory card and a ps2? you could use freedvdboot or freemcboot to launch wlaunchelf and copy saves from the card to a USB stick

no ps2 and no disc drives on my pc I kind of mainly just want to look at what’s on them so if I had a ps2 I’d just do that. being able to turn them into something usable on an emulator would just be a nice bonus
