I haven’t played it yet but I want to. I’ve heard good things. Doesn’t seem like an instant classic or anything, but if you want more Luigi’s Mansion you probably won’t be disappointed.

Has anyone attempted to make a Let’s Play, in the traditional Something Awful sense, out of a purely multiplayer game to any interesting effect? Lots of twitch streams of people playing multiplayer games called ā€œLet’s play XYZā€ but I’m not convinced that those streams try to create some kind of narrative out of the gameplay. Something more like a round-based game, not an MMO, is what I’m curious about.

Edit: upon looking, I’m kind of surprised that there are no MMO or really very many sandbox game LPs on the LP Archive.

if i love Android: Netrunner, are there other card games i should look into? it’s cool having Nisei support and i can always find games on JNet, but maybe i want to look at actually active card games for when i can maybe play something irl again?

Although the only things it has it common with Netrunner is ā€œparticularly complex sci-fi-themed card gameā€, I recommend Race for the Galaxy. It’s the tabletop game I’ve personally played the most (200+ hours probably).

Are there any good animes, OVAs or even cartoons based on video games? Including even promotional tie-in stuff with this like those Tekken CG movies. I remember the first Street Fighter 2 anime movie being an alright watch many years ago but drawing a blank otherwise even from what I’ve only heard from others. Wait, Gungrave season 1 is one, right?

Mostly started wondering after recently learning they made 3 whole Fatal Fury anime films and 3 separate Samurai Shodown ones.

There’s the whole visual novel → romance anime pipeline. Provided you like the romance genre at all, there’s decent anime in there.

Oh right, didn’t even consider visual novels at all. If there are some especially notable ones I’d still like to hear it but am still mostly curious about more ā€œregularā€ games (also realizing that I had somehow completely forgotten stuff like PokĆ©mon, Digimon and similar media franchises prior to posting which is making me aware how silly the question may actually be)

Gungrave is pretty good largely by taking the rough premise of ā€˜undead mobster’ and almost nothing else besides the character designs IIRC?

The anime is shockingly good on it’s own terms though, as a crime story that eventually becomes a sci-fi action show before turning back into a crime story at the end.

Serial Experiments Lain is also kind of one? I think that was more of a multimedia project, though.

final fantasy: legend of the crystals is excellent
there are a bunch of digimon anime, most of which are good
the street fighter ii movie is excellent, the tv series is ok, i haven’t yet seen the educational oav. the street fighter alpha movies suck, but you’ll like them if it’s the year 2000 and you’re a 14 year old who loves street fighter characters and lore
virtua fighter also has a tv series that is ok
the sonic oav is the best animated version of sonic
there’s actually a whole bunch of fighting game oavs from the 90s, whos quality depends entirely on how much you like each game’s characters and lore: psychic force, gowcaizer, toshinden, etc.
tekken the motion picture is a sily b-movie
idol fight suchie-pai 2 isn’t what you’d call good, but it’s an entertaining enough way to pass 20 or so miinutes with friends. inexplicably, it got a dubbed vhs release back in times of old, even though none of the games ever left japan
hi-scoool seha girl is a show laser-targeted at sega otaku and no-one else. each episode is basically just a series of silly sega injokes
the ninja gaiden oav is a great fuck yeah action movie

The English dub was at least on Netflix at some point, my son was pretty into it.

Doom would make such a great anime

There’s a Panzer Dragoon ova, I think I’ve still got the vhs somewhere.
It’s probably not great but I took what I could get.

Dragon Quest Emblem of Roto anime is a charming OVA

the psx multimedia disc came out a couple months after the anime finished airing, it didn’t come first even if it used earlier production materials

I was probably depressed at the time, but I remember enjoying the Tower of Druaga anime. Very Etrian Odyssey-esque notion of a dungeon explored over two seasons. But I think I needed to actively ignore the horny.

The first episode is like a parody retelling of the video game. The rest of the series goes in a different direction.
