Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

yeah i was mostly being pedantic, as i think that Megaman X 4 might be the literal most recent game of its ilk. I don’t feel like the Megaman Zero or ZX games scratch that particular itch very well, they feel more…SoTN-esque? Grindy? Something, I don’t remember them very well tbh.

I haven’t played any of the more recent X games either but I heard they were bad.

and yeah 20XX is definitely not going to scratch that itch. The thing I love about the X games is being able to dash around constantly, and that’s what 20XX does well. I hear 30XX has some sort of “non-roguelite” mode where you approach it the same way you would a Megaman game, but I don’t know if that extends to hand-designed levels or if it’s like, a randomly generated megaman game basically.

Quick question for any SBer that can read Japanese: qrostar (the creator of Hanano Puzzle and Jelly no Puzzle) put up a new website for what looks like a puzzle book. If anyone want to take a quick peak at the page for it I’m just curious if there is anything more to it than that.

The title translates to “slightly unfair puzzles” and the page explains it can be enjoyed alone, with friends, and there is a hint page, and it’s full of surprises and “aha” moments. I dunno if you are implying there is some reason to expect something like Frog Fractions shenanigans from this creator (I haven’t played the games you mentioned) but it looks like a stylish and tricky puzzle book.

Thanks for helping out with that!

The creator made some of my favorite puzzle video games of all time so I was just curious if there was anything more than what I could gather just looking at the pictures.

EDIT: no there wouldn’t be any hidden Frog Fraction-style shenanigans I don’t think.

Are there any modern games that approximate CRTs well?

With a Pi as an emulation box can I use ps4/bone controller headphone jack and volume control?

Could a Pi also play hot mp3s or Spotify as I run an emulator?

I think the DS version of Shiren is on balance better and I think (but not sure, not many people have played both) that’s the more common opinion. You can think of it like a “Scholar of the First Sin” type edition of Shiren, not much substantive content added but a ton of gameplay adjustments made based on experience playing the game.

The main change for the better on DS is that there is an item rarity system. On SNES every item has the same probability to appear and it’s kind of silly. With that plus some other more minor balance changes, Fei’s Final Dungeon actually requires in-depth knowledge to beat on DS, whereas it’s mostly a matter of relying on one or two eventually-near-guaranteed overpowered combinations on SNES.

The main problem with Shiren DS from my point of view is they also added a lot of tedious dialogue scenes with the villagers. Maybe an hour or two of wasted time to unlock all the interesting dungeons, not a lot in the grand scheme of the game but it’s so vapid it feels longer than it is. Emulator with fast-forward would help with that. Another sorta-problem is they added a huge amount of optional extra dungeons which are mostly less interesting than the original ones on SNES. Once you beat the main quest, if you pick an optional dungeon at random on DS you’ll probably happen to pick a tedious one. Do the pistol-start ones that were on SNES: trap dungeon, food dungeon, then Fei’s Final Dungeon, then try the other ones later if you’re not tired of the game (or as a palate cleanser between failed attempts at Fei’s).

Thanks for the thorough explanation. Is the second screen needed? I will check if it’s playable on my Android using Drastc emulator.

As I recall, there’s nothing important on the second screen, since it wasn’t originally designed for DS. They tacked on an extra map and status display.

OK, cool. Otherwise I might also find it for my (hacked, as usual) 3DS

This is kind of esoteric but do any of you have experience negotiating for a domain name?
I found a really url (it’s sub.space) but it’s parked. I looked up who registered and found the guy didn’t use an anonymous service so I googled him and found his Twitter. I want to ask him about getting it for cheap because it’s been parked for 5 years and I’d rather see it used than left as some kind of speculative asset. I’ll probably message him soon but I don’t know if there’s some sort of official process to it so I don’t get scammed

navigating full rom sets on the Retroid Pocket 2 is a pain. I have to back down and ask is there an easy way to auto sort files into alphabetic folders?

Seems fine to open negotiation in whatever way is convenient, and then the way not to get stiffed after you’ve agreed on a price is with a domain escrow service.

Anyone know of an audio player that allows you to slow an audio file to an arbitrary speed without pitch distortion?
