Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

you can rename the protagonist, so Tidus isn’t spoken out loud in the main game that I know of

oh right, the whole tradition of re-nameable protagonists. Now that I think of it, having all the characters call each other by name in FF7r should have felt strange but it wasn’t.

Nope! I actually think the definite clarification on how the name actually is pronounced came in Dissidia cutscenes.

:eyes:

Yeah they never say his name. I feel like Tide - us should be right, Teedus is more of a Spanish pronunciation, like Tito.

Refuse to play FF7R until I can rename all the characters

In 2004 I quit the game because they wouldn’t say Tidus’s name despite the fact he was obviously a character that wasn’t me so what was the dang point of being able to name him.

Pretty sure I remember looking up previews on like RPGamer in ~2000 in which they talk about Tidus’s name being based on the Okinawan word for “sun”, and thus should be pronounced like “TEE duh”

People were posting about how it was pronounced “tee-dus” before the game even came out in English so it was the pronunciation I went with (at the time I didn’t want to associate a comedy show with FFX so I didn’t want to use the tide-us pronuncation), but his Japanese name doesn’t even have an S, it’s just Tida (tee-duh), so tee-dus vs tide-us doesn’t matter at all!

Anyone remember some switch game that, somehow, had like an entire level lifted from Hyper Light Drifter in it? I never knew if there was an affiliation between the devs to explain why it was in there, but it was very strange to see.

It was like the water area from HLD in another game entirely.

never played HLD, but maybe Kamiko?

Oh yeah that’s it!! I’m not trying to support some cop ideology that interferes with creative quotation or remix, but I do wonder how they got away with this…

There’s definitely aesthetic inspiration taken from HLD, but it doesn’t really look close enough to be any kind of infringement to me, unless you mean they also copied the level layout? (That’s what I thought you were suggesting in the previous post)

I haven’t played it to know if the level flows pretty much the same or not. The art is just strikingly similar in my opinion.

This sort of tracks with the previous games made by this studio, specifically Fairune 1 and 2. They both have a sort of “ancient tech + nature” vibe, especially the closer you get to the endgame. I do think those are very similar and I wouldn’t be surprised if Kamiko did take inspiration from HLD but to me it feels of a piece with their previous work.

Not as dramatic of a similarity, but the hub world in Titan Souls (2015) also has a similar aesthetic in one small area.

Maybe there was something in the (sky blue) water circa mid-2010’s. Is it a 2D mutation of the Ueda aesthetic?

To me this just looks like people making aesthetic choices so that they can make simple tile sets without making any attempt to disguise the grid.

Yeah Fairune 2 has this : (spoiler since you’re getting through the game)

math question, sorry for not using proper language here

4 and 3 have no common divisor greater than one. 4² and 3² (i.e. 16 and 9) are the same, and I checked this up to 4⁶ and 3⁶. I assume this holds true forever, but is there any proof of this? And if there is can you explain it to me like I don’t understand anything about math? (I don’t).
