Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

harder choice for me than the top 64 matchups.

feel ys 1 was a great middleground? the tower feels like at least 60% of the game and most of the bosses are in there, but you get to explore the little world and dungeons around it first.

also, the two villages in ys 6 are amazingly adorable little 3d dioramas, and I do feel the lack of something like that in origins. thinking about how mysterious towers sometimes benefit from having a settlement right outside.

Ys used to be one of my favorite series, but i’ve had a real difficult time getting into modern Ys games (VII, Celceta, etc.). i don’t dislike them, but it just doesn’t feel quite the same and i can never play for more than a few hours.

but if Origins is like VI, then maybe that’s for me!

I’ve never played an Ys game and I don’t even know what they are, but I kind of want to try one? What’s the best one to start with?

personally, Ys 1&2 Complete on PC is probably my all around favorite, though the TG/PCE version is also pretty wonderful.

both versions (SNES/PCE) of Ys IV are also really good

but yeah, the later PC/PS2 games with an actual attack button are also good

Does anyone know how easy it would be to make a Wizardry clone in RPG Maker?

Oh? Is that Persona’s art! It’s good, just not something I want living on a prominent case/icon in my house/system

Not to be a prude but this is such a relief to me–I’d been wanting to pick it up for a while

I’ve been playing Ys VIII on recommendation of one friend. Another friend told me he’d have recommended Ys VII to me before I went Ys VIII.

I’m annoyed at some of the really hacky tropey bullshit (the first female character Adol meets you run into while she’s bathing WHOOPS lol slaps you hentai lol ololasd ;fasdj v;) and the ladies could really all stand to put on some more clothes (uh oh, I don’t want this to be my thing) But I’m really enjoying it! I think it’s almost done. The closest thing I can think to compare it to is Tales games but much breezier and more combat-oriented, since things happen in the general field rather than in discrete battle sequences. And Ys VIII has a really charming and distinctive art direction overall. It’s pretty good! 32 hours in and I’m about ready for it to wind down, but I know I’ve got a whole final chapter that hasn’t started yet.

A thing I like about Ys VIII is you build up a home base, which is a thing I always like to see RPGs do.

Has RPGMaker ever lead to any Wizardry-likes? If not, how hard would it make one?

The Oath in Felghana.

Yeah, he did the box art. And I think some stickers that were usually included inside?

They’re all very breezy fast paced ARPGs about a mute guy named Adol looking for adventure with a high gameplay to story ratio

I’d say go for

  • Ys 1&2 Chronicles or whatever is the new version, to experience the ancient bump to kill gameplay, where you feel joy upgrading your iron sword to a steel sword, with a great PC JRPG from 2000 aesthetic
  • Ys Oath in Flegheghleh or Origins for a more normal press A to attack gameplay, 3D environments (With 2D sprites!) and a jump button
  • Ys 8 for the gorgeous megalong (but still breezy) epic set entirely on a desert island with lots of stuff to unlock

They’re all great in their own way, maybe check videos to see what you’d like the most because these games are exactly as good as gameplay videos would show

You can get an early ending by choosing to explore the box it came in instead

there are definitely mods that let you make first person dungeons, and other than that, i think you’d probably be able to do it with just creative use of the inbuilt tools?

i think the magic system might be a problem though, as afaik, rpg maker only allows for typical jp-style MP pools
