is steam killer 7 any good
Tell me about games with level editors that you made levels in and were like “this fucking rules”
I think I rented the GameCube copy of TimeSplitters 2 five times, and 90% of the time was spent making dumb levels with my brother we would deathmatch on. I’m sure if I returned to it today, the tools would be pretty primitive especially compared to what was available on PC at the time, but for a console game, it was pretty impressive.
I fucking loved the level editor in TS2 omg. We’d do DMs in the college dorms and it ruled. I think you could even make little scenarios in it, but I don’t think I ever did…
i adore the flywrench editor! drawing lines is fun
I made a lot of tracks in excitebike
Jetpack!
virtual pinball
the incredible machine
i made a lot of elaborate jungle mazes full of whip traps in far cry instincts that made every deathmatch into a complete nightmare
bangai-o spirits
I remember the demo for Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 came with the level editor but without the ability to save any of them, so my best friend and I used to stay up nights just coming up with quick to implement gimmicks and see if they were doable.
It was better in the demo as skaters had fixed stats, while in the main game they were always increasing. That’s better for the game they made, not as good for the odd obstacle course-esque monstrosities we were coming up with. Just being able to make it to a rail near a ramp loses its luster when you a few years later clear the entire thing on a single jump.
when i was a kid i made this tony hawk underground create-a-park that was like a little suburban village in the middle of a nascar racetrack. i put npcs on top of skyscrapers, one of them said “asssssssssssssss.” there were no cool tricks or skate spots in the park but i was really happy with my construction
I’ve been looking for games with level editors my whole damn life, this is why Mario Maker blew me away.
Jumper 2 was the first one I can remember getting very into, only made like, 10 stages but I spent forever on them. Knytt Stories had the same effect on me.
I’ve never been very good at it but the Lode Runner editor on the PC is lots of fun, I definitely played more of that than the actual game.
Timesplitters 2 was me making what I figured would be perfectly balanced and fun multiplayer maps only to realize I don’t have any friends to play with, so, yeah.
Then I got Cube, which was like a freeware first person shooter akin to Quake, I guess. It wasn’t very good, BUT it had a built-in level editor IN the engine that you could switch to at any time, AND it worked in multiplayer. And you did all the editing in the first person primarily using your mouse. So basically creative mode in minecraft, but more than 5 years before minecraft, and also with guns. It was amazing. My friend and I would spend all day just fucking around, making maps that didn’t make any sense or were incredibly stupid. I loved it.
Cube 2: Sauerbraten was better, technically, but by that point I didn’t really have anyone to play with so I didn’t mess with it much.
Uhh let’s see. I guess those are the ones that ruled the most and that I spent the most time with.
Biker Mice From Mars racing game on SNES would be great with a track editor
I guess I should say ZZT, since I encountered that game in 1997 and then spent like 3 years obsessed with it because I thought it fucking ruled.
Can’t really advise people to fuck with it in the year 2019 if they aren’t already invested in it, though some people are still making neat stuff with it.
Yeah!! My friends and I on a DS multiplayer matchmaking site used to play a bunch of Sauerbraten thirteen (!?) years ago and it was ridiculous how good it was for multi platform freeware at the time
In a similar vein, I wasn’t allowed to play Warcraft II for a few years, but I still got a copy of the map editor and just enjoyed making neat terrain.
Oh shit right, Starcraft’s map editor was incredible. I made one very complex map in that based on the popular-at-the-time map Evolves.
definitely recreated the battle of gettysburg in 8th grade with a replay of a map created in brood war
we couldn’t get it to work correctly on the machines at school so our teacher just gave us a B anyway lol
The best map my cousin and I ever made in time splitters 2 was a hallway that ran the perimeter of the map in a square. It was dotted with crates for cover, the lighting was all like colored and pulsing. Each corner had a sniper rifle in it. You spawned mid hallway and had to pick a direction to make mad dash through the crates. Once setup sniping at max distance was near impossible so you ended up laying suppressing fire while you crept closer. Or you just try to run all the way around the map to try and get someone in the back who was wondering where you went. Looking at the ground made even screen looking impossible. I think that game had AI fighters. I seem to remember matches with more people than we had present in that environment…
