does it strike anyone else as kind of wild that rock and ground are two separate types? what’s that about

Rocks and ground are very different as clearly demonstrated in the film Tremors

rock/ground is funny, but on the other hand rock is super effective against flying while flying is completely immune to ground and that all makes perfect sense to me so

It makes sense that fighting types are weak to psychic but I think the opposite should also be true, don’t tell me that some little psychic waif can handle getting roundhoused

ah but you see that’s why dark is effective against them! bullies beat nerds

i’m always saying the next starters should be dark > psychic > fighting. i’m always saying that.

One thing that helped me with typing was learning that in Japanese Fighting type is called Hero while Dark is Evil. Also:

the easiest way to approximate remembering Fairy type for me is just to remember that they are weak to all of the types that didn’t have good attacking moves in literally any game until recently, and they resist all of the types which are explicitly good. which gets me most of the way there, at least. and i mean, a weird attempt at balancing was the reason they made the type anyway

the hardest thing for me with fairy is remembering which pokemon have been turned into it. i remember playing X/Y and using a fighting type attack against a Granbull and it being not very effective instead of super effective and being extremely confused

Ok, but this looks pretty cool though

Sure, why not, it’s different enough to give it a go.

Meanwhile in Sword I’m like 5 or so Gyms in and I’m surprised there has been very little in the way of like, interruptions to the main quest? No detours through cruise ships or foiling criminal plots by accident or investigating blacked-out power plants. Just constantly “on to the next one” with the gyms. Maybe I just haven’t hit it yet?

Rock x Flying was always funny to me because I imagined a giant boulder landing on a pigeon midflight and thinking “yeah that would definitely kill the pigeon”

same with bugs as well. just a little caterpillar getting smashed by a huge rock. Eat shit, caterpie.

Fight x Rock always made me think of like, martial arts masters in movies breaking bricks with their bare hands. That kinda stuff.

Honestly considering that one of the main draws to pokemon for me was the vivid images the type matchups create in my head.

A popular kanji/hanzi mnemonic method nowadays is to assign familiar/vivid images to the building blocks of them, and then visualize how those two to four elements might interact to symbolize the overall meaning of it

Like the Pokemon weakness memorization, sometimes these images make perfect sense because they’re related to the original etymology of the character but 80% of the time you just make up a totally arbitrary headcanon

Thinking about it I’m pretty sure how I imagined Rock Vs Flying was that if a rock was to damage something it would need to fall down from somewhere, most likely that would be from a mountain and the mountain is higher then something would fly so it would… fall on top of the bird without it noticing?

I had the same visual for your other two examples though.

It would probably be really difficult to focus your Psychic powers if bugs were crawling all over you. Same if a Ghost was haunting you.

If you were a big steel constuct it would probably be hard to keep your balance in an earthquake.

Kind of always think of Flying and Bug Pokémon attacking Grass ones as just tearing them apart and devouring them. Brutal.

i think i probably have an essay or something in me about this but one of the huge reasons r/b/y/g/s (and more) worked for me is because they had gnarly little rpg dungeons in there, and it’s been sad and bewildering to see them whittled away to nothing at all in sword and shield, where instead it seems to be just straight lines between gyms with this puddly toothless open area webbed out between them

Oh this is really good, I love this.

Electric should at least be regular Effective against Grass imho, trees get fucked up by lightning.

counterpoint: using a stick to touch an electric fence you suspect might be hot so you don’t get shocked and curse in front of your mother

yes! the idea of a space you could actually get lost to some degree, to add some sort of stakes and this feeling of “it’s my team and me against the world”…i miss it dearly

7 posts were split to a new topic: Pokémon Legends: Arc V (US)

Thread resurrecting because god damn it I’ll probably pick up one of Scarlet or Violet when they come out later this year.

I really like that fire starter’s design but if I’m being honest Plant Cat aligns very strongly with my interests so I’d probably pick that one
