PC88 Sicko Hour: Xanadu

Look, I have a problem, and it is that I am enjoying these EGG Console releases a lot. I took a break from Hydlide 3 The Space Memories (though I will go back and finish that soon) to play Xanadu, which man I really like this game a lot, but I wanted maps of it, so I started making my own, because there doesn’t seem to be much on this game on the English internet right now.

Level 1:
Level 1

Level 2:
(PLACEHOLDER BECAUSE I HAVE ONE MORE AREA TO FILL IN ON IT)

Level 3:
Level 3

Anyhow, this game rocks and is for sickos, but mapping it out is weirdly fun, and playing with a rewind function and save states (because holy shit the actual saving in this game is mean and brutal).

Whoa never heard of this Project EGG thing but they’ve got over 1100 games for all kinds of crazy systems on their Japanese web service

If anyone wants to join in the Xanadu fun times, the switch version is like 7 bucks and the rewind is a godsend sometimes, but there is also Revival Xanadu on the Internet Archive, which aside from some glitchy japanese in the installation menus, seems to run decently on Windows 10. You have to use the pay to save system though because you don’t have the easy save states of the Switch port, but to make up for it, you get multiple songs in the game, so seems like a decent trade off.

So I’ve been unable to do much in game due to, well, STUFF, but I did find an image someone mapped of one level using a program, which allowed me to rip the tileset for the map itself, so then I rebuilt level 1 in the full tileset, and it is so much prettier.

Here’s Level 4 in the full size style. 2 and 3 are incoming, but I have more to do on them.

I also found the databook that Falcom published about the game (called Xanadu Databook Vol. 1; I also have Vol. 2, but it is all about the second scenario). It has a ton of lore for each monster, and then also a whole lot of technical info on how the game works, though it’s all in Japanese, so I’m having to machine-translate it and then try to make it intelligible.

It also has a ton of cool enemy art to share as well. I will post some of that when I get a chance.

Here’s a guide to the magic in the game, with images and probably poorly translated text from the Dataworks:

Needle & Deg-Needle

Needle
This type of magic can be broadly divided into two types. Needle physically embodies the spirit of the caster as a needle to throw at the opponent. Even novices can use this spell if they learn it, depending on their mental strength.

Deg-Needle uses magic to turn a prepared cedar leaf into steel, sending it into all of the opponents’ bodies. This type of magic clearly belongs to classical magic, and only those with considerable experience can use it.

Mitter and Deg-Mitter

Mitter
Differs from Needle because it embeds mental waves into the opponent’s body. By repeating this act over and over again, the spell damages not only the other person’s mind, but also their body. Once you become proficient, you will eventually be able to cast this spell across dimensions. Deg-Mitter is a similar magic, but it targets multiple people instead of just one. Created by the ancient magician OL=DLEARKE.

Deluge & Deg-Deluge

Deluge
A magic that allows you to manipulate water. It is said that the great sorcerer FUL GARAHAM created this spell after seeing that the entire country was suffering from a major drought. At first glance, it seems like a simple magic, but it exerts tremendous power against certain monsters, especially those that use fire. This magic spread before you knew it, and Deg-Deulge was refined by many magicians.

Fire & Deg-Fire

Fire
Shout a spell at charcoal to communicate with the spirit of fire. There, for a moment, a battle between magician and the spirit of fire unfolds. If the magician wins, he can freely manipulate fire for a short time. However, if he is defeated by the fire spirit, the spell will be of no use. Deg-Fire deals with fairly high ranking fire spirits, but for those who have received a dream revelation, this should be a piece of cake.

Thunder & Deg-Thunder

Thunder
The method for casting this spell is very complicated and mysterious. Recently, a simpler way to cast this spell has been discovered, but the success rate is still low. When you raise your hands and cross them, thunderclouds surround you. Control the lightning that occurs by concentrating your mind. Store it to the limit and release it all at once towards your opponent. Deg-Thunder is so powerful that if you hold metal directly in your hand, you will be incinerated by the lightning bolt. Be careful. To avoid failing, don’t rush. This is the most important thing.

Poison & Deg-Poison

Poison
This spell is said to be a magical art or a masterpiece of magic. The spell was created by the great magician OL=DLEARKE two thousand years ago. Even now, the way it casts its magic has not changed at all. The blood of those who fall under this spell becomes poisonous. In other words, it can definitely cause the death of the person it targets. These spells are not all that difficult either. Even if the spell doesn’t completely work, the effect will definitely appear if you cast it many times in a row. You will see how wonderful and terrifying this magic is.

Corrosion & Deg-Corrosion

Corrosion
Human beings always have some sort of disease, even if they don’t realize it. Of course it’s physical, but it can also be mental. This magic is terrifying, increasing the disease and speeding up its progression thousands of times. However, since the spell has a short range, you should get as close as you can to your opponent and concentrate as hard as possible.

Tilte & Deg-Tilte

Tilte
Even extremely powerful monsters are often weak in another dimension. This spell moves the battle to a dimension the target is weak in, and ends its life in that world. That world is usually the dimension of “death”.

Death

Death
The highest level of attack magic, though the danger involved in casting it is extremely high. After all, the existence of this spells target will be reduced to nothing. This is not something as simple as being transported to another dimension, but rather the entire existence of the target completely disappears from the universe. This happens because all of the power in the entire universe is concentrated in one point in the target’s body. Created by the magician OL=DLEAKE, this spell is absolutely necessary to defeat Garcis. It’s magic.

Here’s the monsters of the first floor:
#Ares

Garcis’s subordinates forcibly woke up the spirits that were sleeping peacefully in the world of the dead. Then he pushed theses spirit into the corpses of the heroes who had resisted the evil magic and collapsed. The monster created in this way is Ares.

As a spirit, this is a nuisance, wandering in the darkness in search of a haven that shouldn’t exist within the labyrinth.

Some say that a sad cry can be sometimes heard inside the cave, and that this is the voice of Ares. I’m just fighting to protect myself, but I don’t want to let my guard down. I want you to be careful.

Bat

Originally, they had their own magic, and was not affected by Garcis’s magical power that much. Perhaps because of this, they often act of their own volition.

It can be said that the bat will not cause harm. However, there are many lightning bats flying over our heads, and we are often so distracted that we are unable to defend against attacks from other monsters.

If we can figure out why bats are the only ones that are not affected by Garcis’s Magic, we will be able to seal away his power itself. This is why passionate magi continue to investigate this creature.

Ochre Jelly (Jery in the book)

Ochre Jelly
If you thought it was just viscous black glowing water, you would be wrong. Ochre Jelly was originally holy water used in churches. However, Garcis took advantage of this and poured the organs of the dead into the holy water, using his tremendous magical power to give it life.

The clear water gushing out of the spring turned black in an instant. The Ochre Jelly approaches without a sound, which is how it swallowed Yujo and his friends. Its movement is slow overall, but it can be quick when attacking. Also, be careful of the acid it spits out.

Bee Giant

The Bee Giant is an insect that has received the magic power of Garcis and has become gigantic.

When Xanadu was known as Paradise, the bees used to fly around the sky in search of the nectar of beautiful flowers. However, that fairy tale was short-lived, and now the bee has become and enemy of warriors, forever wandering in search of blood.

The Bee Giant’s greatest weapon is poison. Its poison is not fatal, but acts fast. The moment any creature is stung, it feels as if it has been poisoned, and will fall unconscious, becoming prey.

It is said that the sight of a herd of bees flying in a dimly lit cave instantly sends a chill down the spine of even the most courageous.

Goblin

A mischievous little demon that lives in forests and mountains.

Goblins hate the sun and prefer darkness. These are normal goblins, but inside the labyrinth world, they change. In groups, goblins will attack anything that moves. The sight of their countless red eyes shining as they squeal in the dark is truly eerie.

Even a seasoned warrior would be surprised for a moment.

Skeleton

This skeleton was brought back from the underworld by Garcis, using magic that summons the dead. If left in the underworld, the souls of the dead can become Ares. It is said that if this happens, the flesh becomes a zombie, and the bones become a skeleton. In the labyrinth, Garcis magical power can only reach a certain range, limiting how far a skeleton can move.

As a side note, the skeleton seems to have magical glasses. If you win a battle with a skeleton, it would be a good idea to steal these glasses.

Boalisk

A venomous snake that originally lived in the tropical jungle, the Boalisk has slipped into the Xanadu realm. At first, it was thought to be a new species of snake, but recently, its origins were determined.

These fast green creatures never attacked humans when they lived in the jungle. However, in the labyrinth of Xanadu, they have turned grey-white, and will attack anything that moves, probably because they lack food.

The Boalisk wanders around the entrance to Xanadu cave, which has good ventilation. It would be best to watch your step when entering the labyrinth.

Fire Elemental

The flame that can be seen at the entrance to the labyrinth is the Fire Element. The spirits captured by Garcis writhe in agony, using their grudge with Garcis as fuel for their flames.

The corpses of heroes and monsters who died a regretful death at the hands of Garcis lie next to this monster. Garcis, afraid the souls of the corpses will reincarnate as his enemies, turns their souls into monsters such as these.

To avenge their regrets, I want you to put an end to this monster.

The book also includes a really detailed list of stats for each monster, including all four variants of the monster, their defenses depending on which side you hit and elements, and even something called Combat Action Type, which is just an unexplained number.

Fuck you stage 5, I mapped you out. I still haven’t beaten all of you (that bottom middle castle building thing is HUGE and has a boss i will go back and level when I can) but I made it through you and am on to level 6, so yeah.

This game remains real sicko pervert hours.

Level 6 is now done as well. It was a pretty cool one, getting you stuck in a giant loop unless you used a mattock to break out of it. Pretty good.

I updated the Level 5 map above to fix a problem (but there is still a big gap in the middle that I want to go back and fix), and also went back and beat the giant dungeon there, so I have my second crown of the four needed to finish them game. The boss was a pushover.

Threeji (being my third attempt at the game, after Booji and Twoji) is now a Swordsman Warlock.

I love how the shading on the maps makes them look like woven tapestry.

Just Kudos. I could never put up with any of this, but I’ve always had a passing curiosity. Cheers.

I finished mapping level 7 tonight. I will admit I did consult the Databook to make sure I was accurate on the teleportation points.

If you look very closely at the intersections between the boxes on the main part of the map, you can see some of them have a slightly different texture on them. Touching one of these will teleport you to a random other one of them, it seems. This is so infuriating when you fuck up and accidentally touch one of them.

Here is a blown up difference between the bricks:

This is a normal brick background.

Here is one of the teleporter ones. Lol.

Also there is a really common enemy on this level that gives you Karma, so learning to avoid them was fun.

So I finished Level 8’s map and it rules:

I will admit the background tiles got a little messed up at one point and I am fighting my urge to fix every single one of them, but otherwise, it is done.

I will probably lose that battle with that urge at some point, I know.

I do have to finish the dungeons on this level and there is a boss on level 7 that wrecked me that I need to go back on. My build is starting to have some problems. My magic is ridiculous at this point, but I can’t take a hit at all. Gotta keep working on my Fighting level. Threeji is currently a Swashbuckler Necromancer.
