PC88 Sicko Hour: Xanadu

That site is pretty funny, in that the strategy guide just doesn’t mention things, like how the warp on Level 0 works. I only actually figured that out the other day, whereas I was just brute forcing it before. It’s also a weird warp in that it seems to only be one way, but I will test it later.

The maps are good though. I wonder what is specifically wrong on the guidebook. The text, what I could translate of it, is pretty cheeky and largely in universe, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it had some clear lies and bullshit in it.

not sure yet, I am still in the stage of collecting strategies, development stories and magazine snaps (personal habit of play retro game). I was originally planning to play the game with the guide books, but read from a Japanese blog that some strategies mentioned in the guide can have irreversible consequences. So now I put the book aside.

different style of player hand drawing maps I found

Oh shit, time to become PC98 Sicko Hour:

To explain, this is the PC98 version of original Xanadu, with upgraded graphics and made slightly less brutal, and also with an in game map function. So hype to get this today. I did eventually get this running on my PC, but the EGG versions are so much easier to just play.

Oh shit this is nice. I already lost like three hours to it, clearing all of the first stage except the boss. I’m slightly over levelled in magic, but I’m working to catch up my melee.

I’ve balanced out a bit better, but there are a few things helping.

  1. They are a lot more generous abouut red potions in this one. Red Potions heal about half your health, and I think I got like 5 of them the whole time in the original, as they only show us as random drops.
  2. I need to go back to the original to make sure of this, but at least in this version, the last enemy in a group that you kill, if you do it with melee, drops a better item. Some enemies you do not want to fuck with melee-wise at all, but when you start taking advantage of this, it leads to more red potions and other drops. I noticed this actually because this is how it works in Xanadu Next, which I am still unclear of if it is a sequel or a remake.

So now the bad news: I am short on cash and keys, which is a problem. See, you can buy keys, but the problem is that each time you level up, the keys cost more. Now the strat is to buy a shitton of them at low levels, which I thought I had done, but lemme tell ya, I had not. So now I am figureing that out.

Oh one more note, and a reason to play the EGG versions with save states: Saving in this game is hilariously mean. Saving costs money based on your level (the game does autosave in certain places at least), and if you don’t have that money, you get karma, which can only be gotten rid of by poisoning yourself. If you have karma, you can’t level up, and I think some of the shops won’t sell shit to you. It’s hilariously evil, and I think if I ever beat the game using the EGG saves, I might try to do it the Real Way then.
