You do know how long that takes though, right? At the start I was around 716500 LY from the center. The fastest way to the core is through black holes. I went through one and it brought me 500 LY closer. Now maybe this is upgradeable with warp drives and so on. Also, not every system has a black hole and you have to go through a certain process to unlock the next one.

So if you do the maths and consider that each black hole jump takes just one minute of loading time (it takes longer for me but maybe an ssd and faster cpu changes things) you’re looking at 24 hours of just loading time alone. Then you need to get warp cells for all the jumps and the material or units for them… Soooo, yeah.

Well, I said ā€œwe’ll seeā€. Also I’m only seven hours into this save so I’m still kind of at the very beginning.

Thanks! House of the Dying Sun looks like just the thing.

Also given that’s it’s only like ten bucks, would try strike vector ex with some folks if i can get it to run

somebody play vidcons w/ me I’m lonely

I’m surprised at how little attention house of the dying sun has gotten here! it’s really good! I’m looking forward to playing it when my egpu arrives today!

there are other ways to travel long distances

spoilers:

there are stargate-esque portals that you’ll come across during the main storyline. you can eventually learn 16 portal glyphs that you can input to create a portal to anywhere (the glyphs translate to those hexadecimal coordinates any signal booster shows you.) this seems to be the preferred way to reach player civilizations and what-have-you, tho i haven’t personally messed with them much

I am just at that point in the story but haven’t gone through yet! I’ll see how far/where that takes me. This might be new since some update or other, I think it wasn’t in the original release and black holes were the fastest way then…

About the thing you mentioned though:

Doesn’t that take you to a whole different universe? I’ve been through one portal but it wasn’t the one with the many glyphs you have to charge up, that’s the second one. And all the quests from that place have a red swirl symbol next to them. So I feel like that’s like the nether from minecraft. A sort of mirror world. I don’t know if you can reach the galactic core from that place and if it’s different from the other galactic core or what. I’ll have a look on the galaxy map next time I play

i think you can only access other galaxies thru reaching the center. i think that red icon just means the quest target is in another system. it should give you the option to restart the quest in your current system (so you don’t have to figure out how to travel thousands of lightyears to do a base building quest you were putting off)

I actually have a lot of quests from other systems but they don’t have that symbol. Only the three quests from when I went through the portal do. So, idk.

Haven’t gone back to the game yet but I’ll keep you updated on this mystery when I find out more.

Oh the buttrock one, I forgot about this.

It’s competitive though so :man_shrugging:

huh. maybe it’s just the procgen ones like the base building quests that you can restart?

did i mention i love games that require you to ignore a ton of usability problems

what, no. It says on the Steam page that it does have a singleplayer campaign. With ā€œvideo sequencesā€ and all. I like what I saw in the trailer so I’ll definitely check it out for the singleplayer

It was on PS Plus a while back and the narrative parts should be skipped instantly. Can’t say about mission design because I hit eject before I got out of simplistic tutorial missions.

That doesn’t sound like you have it a fair shot. But then, videogames don’t deserve that anyway. If you feel like you want to quit you should quit, no matter how much or how little time you invested. I can dig that.

I play a lot of games but very few more than half an hour; I need the breadth and have to hope I’m able to predict where things are going from a quick bite.

It wasn’t necessary.
I just want Elite to have atmospheric planets you can land to as well…

yeah, I regret going for the ā€œfull experienceā€ in Subnautica instead of choosing the mode where you don’t have to eat and drink (everything else stays the same). These two survival elements do nothing except slow down the game because you have to fill up those gauges every now and then.

I’d like survival mechanics that actually speed up the game. So, if you do a certain thing regularly you can do the other work you’re doing faster, or you become stronger, something like that.

Or at least let me progress to a point where I don’t have to care about it. Like if you have a certain number of cured meats and water available in your home base you just eat them automatically when you’re out and about and don’t have to worry about it anymore. The race to that could be interesting and then you’re freed up for the rest of the game and can concentrate on the fun parts.

spoilers about getting to the galactic core follow

So I went to a black hole in the universe that seems like another dimension to me. There the black hole took me 6000 LY closer to the core, as opposed to 500. The ā€œalternate dimensionā€ is itself 5000 LY closer to the core than where I started the game. But I still don’t know if it really is an alternate dimension or if the red swirls mean something else. I googled it just now and I can’t find any info on it. I just thought of this being an indicator of the color of the sun where that quest is, though. Which is weird because I think you need a special drive to go to red sun systems. But then, I warped there through a portal, so maybe that’s it after all!

Either way, I’m done with this game. I tried to get back into it today but all the story quests have advanced to a point where following them is just tremendous tedium and not fun at all. You just go from A to B. Sometimes you talk to a character. Then you go from B to C. It’s just endless monotony. Plus, the story suck too in my opinion. I was following it to see cool stuff but it’s become apparent that there just isn’t any apart from what I’ve already seen.

I played this game for 25 hours, so I enjoyed it up to a point. But now it’s time for other games again.
