The best part of NMS is still coming up with ridiculous names for planets and hoping someone sees them someday.

you can buy ion batteries at any market computer for like 8000 units, don’t bother crafting them, just buy a stack of 10 whenever you’re prepping to land on a hot planet.

you can also recharge that shield without going into the inventory by opening the quick menu > recharge technology.

i’m kinda wondering if i’m missing all these planets that drain people’s shields instantly? mine last like 5-6 minutes on hot/toxic/etc unless a storm is rolling thru, and it’s fairly easy to find sodium (or ion batteries) to recharge as i go? if you’re totally out of recharge resources you can avoid storms by going into a structure or cave, or worst case just dig a hole with the terrain manipulator and hide in there.

there are also some craftable exosuit mods that’ll boost your environment resistance across the board. i don’t remember the name of the one i have, i’ll look when i’m playing next

Yeah and I don’t think anything is coming up anytime soon… Really sad. The good days with Wing Commander, Freespace and so on are over

There is however a new realistic flight sim that looks interesting. It’s even got VR support. That’s gotta be really dope but you probably need two high end PCs to run it

There have been at least half a dozen space dogfight games at the arcadey level of Wing Commander in the past few years, at mid-budget indie levels ($2m-$10m).

are there any that are like freespace 2 but with a controller friendly control scheme?

They’re all designed to run on gamepads (heck, even Elite: Dangerous is palatable on a pad).

I haven’t dipped into them to check but I think single player campaigns are the weakest element in the recent games. Multiplayer and skirmish is the big focus. House of the Dying Sun is much cheaper than the others but runs with a Homeworld ambience and gets quite far.

did wings of saint nazaire ever go past alpha?

Looks like it’s been dark for two years. Probably hit production stage where fundamentals have been in place but actually finishing is a huge mountain.

Still weird that this one was made by a dude I went to high school with. Decent guy too, so I should probably throw some money at his game at some point.

He would hangout at 17-BIT when we ran indie nights and had one of the most impressive early VR games among our group. Cool dude.

Wait what the fuck how did I miss this tell me more

i need names and links rtfn

EDIT: please :3

Uh, without looking too deep (the only one I’ve played is House of the Dying Sun because the rest are mostly multiplayer focused):
House of the Dying Sun (single player but low-budget)

Strike Suit Zero (ship to mech, get iffy reviews but good user reviews on Steam)

Eve Valkyrie (is this thing still on?)

Star Conflict (looks kind of lame action play, though)

GoD Factory: Wingmen

Everspace

That reminds me I had this one called uuuhhhhhhhh Starpoint Gemini or something. It seemed kind of cool but ran like ass on my old computer. I should give it another shot now.

After Witcher 3. Always after Witcher 3…

Anyway thank you for this primer. House of the Dying Sun and Everspace both seem right up my alley, I will need to check them out…

Strike Vector! That’s the one I couldn’t quite remember. Seems like Hawken (visuals but not the feel of the genre it wants to be. Maybe that’s unfair and they’re actually going for a Descent-like):

I didn’t know indies were making this kind of game. Thank you! Will definitely check out some of them

You’re posting in a thread about one of them right now lol.

There had also been a small indie resurgence of Descent-like games, but I haven’t played any of them yet.

On topic, I got my freighter last night. I think I might actually go the distance and make it to the galactic center. We’ll see.

Well, it’s a pseudo indie for me because of Sony’s involvement but your right of course. It’s not anything like Wing Commander though, whereas the other games BustedAstromech posted are.

I knew about the descent-likes, so at least I’m not completely ignorant
