Maybe you can! I haven’t messed with base building at all though

I got it off GoG when they were doing a 60% sale on it (because of the update and because GoG is trying to promote their platform). Feels like a tech demo showing off seamless space flight from inter-planetary to intra-planetary because it’s missing anything mechanically complex in the basic game loops I’ve encountered so far. It suffers the same way Starbound did in the content has a tendency towards losing its variety in procedural noise that isn’t varied enough from each other. For example, there will always be a cave system with stala[ct/gm]ites giving Iron Oxide on planets and there will always be only one space base in a system.

The only things that have perked my interest are the non-procedural bits so far. The missions tied to the main progression, the Travellers, and even the base building. The trick they have with the last is the central node has a teleporter that can be linked to other teleporters that are sometimes present in a space base. So no matter where you end up nomading off to, you can eventually return to your place. There’s storage possibilities but I’ve heard it’s even worse inventorying than the main UI.

Also there’s a Cargo tab on your Exosuit that can be upgraded with open slots in the same, normal way. Holds the same space as if it were on your spaceship but it’s a pain to shift things between it and the general inventory space. I’ve been using it to store Power Cells for envirosuit charging.

The base building is actually kinda neat in that it automatically gets a portal in it that you can warp to from any space station, so it doesn’t hinder nomad-ry. There are a lot of quests for developing it out as well, which is a nice enough thing if you want to get into it.

But yeah, the storage facilities in it are…not great to use. This UI is not meant for inventory management, I tell you whut.

The inventory management was by far the most aggravating aspect of the game when I played it in its original state. If they haven’t fixed that I think I’ll wait a bit more.

I mean, probably just sell everything except Plutonium. That’s been my solution. Plutonium is what gets your machine off the ground, and everything else is mostly so abundant as to not be a problem. No need to hold on to that “rare” commodity in the infinite universe.

Oh, there’s a new feature where you can scan a planet and it will tell you what the special resources there are, so no more having to land and scout around, just scan. That makes inventory management a little nicer because you don’t have to worry so much about finding stuff again. So just sell it.

I started a new game. I like it but every time I play it sends the PS4 fan into overdrive. Is that just me? I haven’t cleaning out my system in a while. Maybe it just needs a good dusting?

I agree, when you’re slot deprived just sell everything that isn’t fuel (this includes Iron and Thaumium/Carbon), Nanites, and maaaaybe some of the extra elements necessary for Warp Cell creation. Once you’ve got a bigger vessel and more slots on your Exosuit, you can relax that for … actually I’ve no idea. Base building materials?

i mostly solved my inventory woes thru good fortune. i found a crashed A-class hauler ship and i’m slowly fixing up its 35ish slots as i can afford to

it looks like ships now have trade in value when you barter with NPCs so i’m hoping to find a less busted ship of equal-ish value and ¢a$h out

Some gripes about the update vs. the original game:

Ships that land in space stations don’t have much in the way to offer in terms of differing cargo. They will have, at most, two specialized resources that seem to exist only for trading. The rest of their stuff will be exactly what the space station sells. Their prices don’t differ from the station prices at all. I’m sure that this was done to prevent people from buying something from a trader, then turning around and selling it to the space station for a profit, which is very boring and something I totally did when I played this game a year ago. The side effect is that I can’t buy any of the basic shit from traders if the space station doesn’t already carry it. I just want some Thamium9!!!

The main story is okay, but it really slows me down in terms of seeing differing systems. It’s a lot of jumping between planets in a system to get things done, and then occasionally warping to a new system. I want to see lots of systems, not go to the same planet three times!!!

The blueprints are less common and really expensive, which I guess makes them more meaningful, but is kind of a bummer. I liked when I could install all sorts of weird tech in my suit without having to decide whether it was a meaningful purchase first or not. This is more of a style thing, I guess.

Landing in freighters is really boring!! You couldn’t do it at all before, but so far it’s just like a space station except you can’t talk to anyone interesting or trade anything! I guess you can buy a freighter but, who wants to??? (they are really expensive)

This might just be because I have already played the game for 30 hours pre-patch, but I feel like the game is somehow less mysterious. There are a lot more aliens just wandering about in trading posts and the space station, and somehow the game just feels…colonized? I liked that it was kind of a dead universe before. But that’s my NOCTIS IV experience talking, I think.

Some good things about the update:

I don’t have to worry about Life Support very much anymore because it is recharged every time you launch your ship. That’s really nice, because constantly finding Thamium9 to recharge the life support is boring and really annoying.

I’m enjoying the story thing pretty well, even though I wish it was a bit quicker paced. The writing is pretty good, and I like that it seems to be diving into things that the original game only gestured at (travellers, the sentinels).

I’m less worried about my inventory than ever. I sell a lot of shit, and generally that’s been working out great. Partially this is because I get less blueprints, and therefore I’m not worried about holding on to some rare element so that “some day I can build this gun upgrade.” I don’t have any gun upgrades.

Partially it’s because I’m not constantly worried about running out of energy. It seems like the life support and environmental hazard protection bars go down way, way slower, and planets are just generally less hostile.

Fighting in space is, somehow, more enjoyable. I can’t put my finger on this but it does seem to be a bit more interesting.

You can get reaaallll low to the ground while flying now, and also smash into stuff. Yes please.

Still haven’t built any bases, I guess this is the next step in the story mode though so that’s good.

I’ve only done two non-story missions. Maybe other ones are good??

I haven’t really followed the atlas path at all, although I think I will when I get the chance. It seems more interesting than last time.

The missions are there to get you blueprints, money and standing with the various races/factions. The ones you want to focus on are those that can be overlapped with each other and don’t require to be in a specific system. Killing fauna, sentinels and scanning things are the strongest options. “Missing persons” are acceptable, especially duplicates because their game code is too simple and they all point to the same person hiding out. Cracking open manufacturing facilities just gives me something different to do.

Finding items is a crapshoot because the quest line, so far as I can tell, does not show the requirement. It could be elements you already have in your pockets, it could be exotic products that you can’t even harvest yet. And then you have to go to a specific location (always a trading post so it could be handy if you’re looking for words/other places of interest) to dump them on your client.

Shooting pirates is a fun side gig occasionally though that might change depending on the accuracy of your shooting and level of control for your ship.

And I think that’s it. I’ll more often than not forgo picking up any because they don’t coincide with the reason I’m here in the system. And I’m not even sure beyond letting you at harder missions what faction standing does for you. Feels like yet another system that’s at that prototype stage, standalone to the rest of the mechanics.

does wildlife react appropriately to your thoughtless barnstorming? Can you knock over alien giraffes?

It doesn’t seem like wildlife loads while you are flying. But I’ve only seen a couple of large creatures, and I wasn’t paying that much attention, so maybe! You can definitely crash into trees.

How do you move your base, btw? I picked the planet they told me to and it’s hot and ugly and I hate it

Find another base module somewhere else and there’s a thing you can activate in it to relocate, except you’ll lost most of everything rather than move.

my stuff isnt lost! when i rebuilt container 0 it had everything i left in it at my old base. this is the most incomprehensible UI lol
