Norman Skye

After watching this video, I have to admit that the metanarrative stuff in there is reallly cool (spoilers, obv) but the design problems are there, and are serious

Last night, I came across my first world with things discovered by another player. I’d have thought the chances of that would be very slight. But it may be because I’m on the ā€œAtlas Path,ā€ and other players are directed toward the same landmarks.

Apparently the rumor that your discoveries expire was not accurate. I’m glad, because I like the idea of coming across something that has been seen by someone but by very few.

I am still hoping to come across a giant sea creature. That’s my main goal for the game. I did find some decent-sized squid-like creatures, but they were not big enough to qualify.

Has anyone found a totally aquatic planet?

I don’t think there are any totally aquatic planets. I have found planets that are like 75% or more water though.

Rest well this night, for tomorrow you sail for the kingdom… of MattsPlanet420.

Based on what the creators have said the algorithms are limited to?

I suppose a totally aquatic planet wouldn’t work if you need to land your ship somewhere, although I really really like the idea of a planet where you actually can’t touch down because of its composition.

Probably the worst aspect of the NMS shitshow is the angry gamers now feeling entitled to some sort of public statement from Hellogames. What the hell

What I liked about the majority water planets was that they were the rare instance of a planet where I literally couldn’t go to any of the locations that I scanned because they were underwater and I didn’t yet have the blueprints to make me breathe underwater longer, whatever they were called.

Like, I could just barely swim all the way down to a location and swim back up but otherwise didn’t have the ability to do anything about it.

the bile for this game is way over the top but it’s pretty amazing that they haven’t taken down or replaced those 2014 trailers from storefronts at this point

See, I don’t get the trailer thing. You’d have to take down most game trailers if you had to remove all those that don’t prefectly match final games, and the NMS ones don’t significantly differ from the final result. It’s like the understanding that games are software and can, up to the release, differ from earlier concepts has been lost. To me Hello Game’s only failure is not coming out and admitting they didn’t have time or resources to implement players meeting face to face in the end, but even that would not constitute false advertising because they actually removed the multiplayer thing from their box.

Yes, but they as a company don’t have to do anything if they don’t want to. No statements, no ā€œapologiesā€. They can (and in my opinion should) just let it pass and keep silent

The silence only makes it worse, unless of course Murray & co retire from the industry in which case who gives a shit indeed.

NMS sky is such a trainwreck, but I wouldn’t put the blame solely on Hello Games either. Sony wiped off their hands from the whole deal, and maybe it shows my ignorance of the scene, but surely in a megacorp like Sony, someone handling the game on Sony’s side must’ve realized how all the promises were fucking insane and outright stupid, at least not in any way accomplishable by a team of such size and limited by the current hardware (like the statement that NMS will have no skyboxes, lol).

I mean I don’t think it’s some kind of betrayal or that it’s ā€œfalse advertisingā€. I’m not mad at every movie that doesn’t have scenes that were in the trailer. But I guess I do honestly feel like the ones that are up lean slightly too close on the concept video side for me. My thing is that they actually did made perfectly good and representative trailers for the launch so why not use those?

Whatever they say, they are going to lose. And at this point, they hopefully have lawyers limiting what they can. But it’s never actually going to pass even into the PR cycle of whatever next game they make.

I agree with you guys that people really don’t understand that games can change over the course of development and the fact that everyone put their hyper consumer nerd hopes and dreams into this idea of an ā€œinfinityā€ simulator is what made the backlash so stupid and cartoonish.

Doing…any…PR…or damage control isn’t about appeasing someone who has made a graph listing the UI differences for their lawsuit. But right now that dude will completely control the conversation about the game for the foreseeable future.

I’ve still been playing this a little every night. I’ve finished the ā€œAtlas Pathā€ (which actually makes a sort of an attempt to address some of the game’s weaknesses in its narrative) and I’m now jumping toward the center of the galaxy. I’ve already heard that the ending is quite anticlimactic, but that’s fine.

Apparently it really was a fluke that I came across some areas discovered by another player early on. I’ve traveled a lot more since then and have not seen another trace of anyone else.

I came across one world that for some reason strongly reminded me of landscapes I have seen in dreams. Since the planets don’t vary all that much, I don’t know what it was about the particular landscape and color scheme that did it, but it was an odd feeling. (I periodically have dreams that I’m in a remarkable place but have forgotten my camera, which doesn’t allow me to fully appreciate the situation.)

I can imagine that either a sequel or copycat game will eventually be able to take what No Man’s Sky does right and make something better out of it. I still haven’t gone back and looked at the trailers and interviews that made people feel so cheated. Maybe I shouldn’t, since my experience with the game has been positive, overall.

I think I’m done with this game, unless they expand it with something really compelling later. I didn’t make it to the center of the galaxy, and based on the numbers it would take way too long to do that. I got the platinum trophy last night after seeing that it would take little effort to fulfill the last few requirements, and I considered that a good stopping point. It’s probably also a sign that I spent more time with the game than it ultimately deserved. I had fun with it, though.

This was my fourth and final ship. I saved up for a long time to get it.

Oh, I did eventually come across some things discovered by one other player, bringing my total to two.
