Man the bottom tier of that list would cause so many problems here, haha.
itâs way more fun (ime) to make as complicated a format for this kind of thing as humanly possible
it says they got experts to compile the list, but i guess the email must have gone into my spam folder
New Vegas is truly excellent, if you can stand Bethesdaâs jank ass engine (I cannot)
in keeping with âvideogame history is winding and never endingâ
this casual tweet seems to upend that Linkâs Awakening interview where they talk about how it was âinspired byâ Twin Peaks to uhâŚsomething more lol
edit: also, Mark doesnât seem even remotely mad or salty here, but i feel like itâs just another example of how consistently grimy corporate creative environments are, just inviting people in for chats, taking their ideas, and then years later talking like âi made thisâ because they donât want to deal with whatever murky legal waters theyâve now landed themselves in and how they all do it with a straight face
Guests and consultants seem to float through creative directorsâ offices; the personality type seems attracted to novelty and social connection as they spend most of their time waiting for a team to deliver on ideas discussed months or years ago. I would assume Mark doesnât seem salty about it because heâs been in and around lots of these hobnobbing situations, knows howâs obnoxious it is to the people who work there and how their delivery of it is the bulk of the work, and knows how outside ideas tend to be taken up by good teams only if theyâre in the same direction as they were going. Itâs far more likely to create a distraction that eventually gets discarded.
Iâm extremely skeptical that high-concept ideas have much if any value on their own, or that they can be stolen. They only count if a team is ready and like-minded to make that thing happen.
yeah, agreed. i feel like his lack of feeling anything negative about this is very much tied to the fact that he is fairly important in his own right and at that point (and still) would probably not care very much / knows the ropes.
i value your insights and think youâre probably correct, but there are also lots of stories of ideas/concepts/whatever being outright taken from people who attempted to get an idea off the ground or were brought in to give ideas and then told âwe donât need that, but thank you,â only to see their ideas manifested months or years later (maybe less so in games, though, iâm not keeping a tally)
i just think that the fact that none of the folks involved ever mentioned actually meeting with Mark to be kind of suspect, but also, lots of interviews with Japanese game designers seem to have this kind of obtuseness to them
Yeah, the story of the outsiderâs pitch that gets rejected and then later internally produced is absolutely real and probably not what happened here. Whatâs the difference? I think a pitch, bundled into a saleable concept, is an offer to purchase something. You canât turn it down and then use it. Likewise, if a writer is contracted to develop work, say a setting or backstory, and then fired and given no due credit, thatâs scummy behavior. Consulting work should be credited but often isnât and that relationship starts with the expectation that itâs about selling work product.
I interpret âI met with themâ as a light visit and probably not close to consulting work, but itâs a vague sentence.

My hope of being able to read more than three consecutive sentences about Linkâs Awakening without a claim that the game is just basically Twin Peaks: The Game has just been permanently thwarted
On The Air: The Game, Hotel Room: The Game
it would be really funny if it turns out that the thing mark frost contributed to the game was, like, the weirdly idiosyncratic-for-zelda temporary power up items
yeah or like âmake Marinâs dad look like Marioâ
While trying to cast my thinking back some years Iâm still not able to place in my mind the exact scene where Agent Dale Cooper traded a can of dog food with a crocodile
maybe he got mixed up not knowing his videogames and nintendos and he meant the other tp inspired game, final fantasy 7
thinking about cloud as zackâs doppelgänger asking âhowâs aerith???â
canât wait for ninty to releas a linkâs awakening successor that is twin peaks the return the game
for the middle act of the game you play link reincarnated into the body of their tingle tulpa
