Delusions of grandeur to think of this as an “alternate canon” as opposed to a traditional canon arranged in a nonsensical/potentially concerning form. But I love list
In Breath Of The Wild, gaming found its Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
Breath of the Wild
Tears of The Kingdom
Hanky of the Panky
Bioshock Infinite at 83 above Rez. Fallout 3 above New Vegas. this list has lost legitimacy and we arent in the top 50 yet
I’ll take solace in SMW beating SMB3 though.
They forgot to make New Zealand Story #1 as well.
Drives me insane they don’t specify a version of Tetris. 1985 seems to imply the voting panel prefer the fucking Elektronika 60, get outta here GQ.
and world warrior is the worst version of sf2
Yeah, I could respect SSF2T over Third Strike, but that seemed like a goof.
That’s probably factually true. It’s my favorite version, I guess because it’s the simplest and homeliest. I like the original stage colors. And I don’t know about vs. play.
Street Fighter Collection 2 (PS1) version
69. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2000)
nice list
i mean it’s always going to be impractical to do that because in this format you’ll just get all the votes split between classic tetris (NES/GB), tetris the grandmasters, and tetris effect, with a few sickos throwing in the next tetris or CD-i tetris - the end result is often that tetris just misses the list entirely or one version squeaks in at a low rank even though a bunch of people voted for it
same with SF2, altho that one has a much more prevalent consensus at least, with CPS2 super turbo being a perennial favorite in my experience
the same thing was done with several series the last time we had a list here, including tetris and like… EDF?
edit: well now that i look at the list again i realize they put Tetris and Tetris Effect both on there, so i guess they are just grouping all the “retro” tetrises together or some shit
actually now that i’m thinking about this it seems like the way to do it is to just have subset ranking - maybe there’s a better term for this but i don’t know it lol
so you can have each tetris and its number of votes listed under the parent tetris series, which has all the votes from its children
you could compare individual games, see if there’s any consensus on version, and also look at the aggregate score if you just want to know how tetris as a whole compares to something more singular
I agree it becomes impractical with larger series but I feel that Mario and Zelda have this same problem and end up dominating lists like this. There are 5 Zeldas and 6 mainline Mario games on this list (>10% of the list), guess all these versions of Tetris don’t really stack up.
There’s definitely better ways to do it and with the consensus of an informed bloc of voters but ye… Idk, just pick a Tetris, not the vague cultural object of Tetris.
I still stand by my previously aired sentiment of SMW = Dumb Bullshit Is At It Again
Regarding the overall methodology of the list, I feel that it’s very odd to have someone’s 1st place vote count for 10 times as much as their tenth place vote, especially considering how (given the nature of the list) every voter probably thinks every game they’re voting for is at least a 9/10. I feel that bumping the point value of every vote up by 10 or using a flat approval-based system would produce a more accurately representative list — though that just might mean more dominance from Nintendo, et al.
Also, a ratio ~250 voters to ~650 unique games voted for, if nothing else, makes this list feel narrower than anything else.
guess we need to make our own, should be pretty simple
I don’t understand how a 3D Fallout game can be in that list at all
we could also try to do a list that intentionally sidesteps a large swath that would normally be on these lists
say we remove any picks found here
why do we keep doing this to ourselves
