News VI: Fires of Rumorcon

I feel like this would make a great mobile game. Maybe even some kind of AR project

ughhhh flat arenas are so boring we already had the banner saga and it sucked

his aesthetic choices are not interesting either, this is DOA imo

As someone who’s kind of tired of SRPGs, I don’t mind the flat arenas - the goal seems to be streamlining the combat decision-making Midnight Suns/Into the Breach style and I feel like they’re onto something here - and I do like some of the oldschool gaming things they fetishize (esp all the Persona 1/2 things).

But yeah, the Neon White-adjacent tone of Americanized JP popculture, the lack of atmosphere and friction with the world, the fantasy of urban horror being too abstract for me too care, UI/UX/font issues, words words words (most of them cliche and/or unengaging)
I’ve been cautiously excited, and still want to give a shot, but this kind of demo should reassure me that they know exactly what experience they’re aiming for at this point of dev, and it mostly made me worried that they don’t

It couldn’t have been a mustache, he didn’t have one in his versus mode portrait OR in the Nintendo Power magazine drawing of him!

I always figured it was his big open downcast mouth. He was a mouthbreathing goon!

i will give this a try because while

american jrpg is still exciting to me, even though i’ve never played one (or seen one) that makes me lustful for it.

anyway, love the persona 1/2-isms, love the 3d boss in a flatter world like its out of breath of fire iv, but “streamlined srpg” (especially one with a flat square grid) makes me think of something like grindstone or card of darkness or another threes-ified phone strategy game. maybe tactics games shouldn’t be slow, but being frictionless seems ill-advised. need a descriptor like the once-tried “crunch” but for perfect chunky, going-forwards-and-back menu-rhythm before the final confirm press and your little tactics sprite goes and does your little bidding. well. i will actually go and see about this game. maybe.

plus

extremely wary of very online teens written by older people

I had no idea this existed. definitely the kind of dumb shit I’d play if I saw one in the wild. I wonder if it’s any good.
