News VI: Fires of Rumorcon

seems to be a trend along with neon making marian finally punch skullmageddon in the stomach and river city girls making her buff as hell so

i think this is the first Double Dragon to feature fireable guns since the Virgin Interactive Game Gear DD, so that’s…something

so is personifying the inscrutable ā€œMATINā€ Stage 1 background reference into a playable character with a shield, i guess

i’m not really sure what to make of this one, to be honest

Looks more like it’s taking cues from the Scott Pilgrim game than old DD games to me.
Also the colour palette puts me in mind of the GBA, I think it reminds me of Minish Cap? I guess it’s the hues all being a bit brighter than I’d expect.

I’mnot getting Double Dragon ish vibes from this? I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be feeling from this, but if it’s nostalgia then it’s not working. The palettes are way too bright, not the sort of sun bleached ruins of urban 1980s landscapes.

I’ll be optimistic, Double Dragon + GBA Colors + coins everywhere = river city ransom EX. Developer seems 2 be like two people in Singapore who’s last game was also a beat em up…i choose ā€˜hope’

I never read the Abobo sprite as having a mustache. That i-mockery fan game was the first place I remember really pushing that.

Abobo.com might have been my first ever internet message board experience.

i would like DD to be a little grimier than this

it’s like when everyone convinced themselves every game ever made was now octopath traveler after the second game ever to look similar was suggested except this time for ninja turtles its real just kidding mostly he he he

but also remember when the universe rewarded us with the most boys are back in town possibility and they gave Double Dragon back to the original team and they made the most truly authentic and genuine followup to the beloved franchise only it sucked ha ha ha

This basically happened twice with also instantly-forgotten ā€˜Stay Cool Kobayashi-San’…which for all i know could be good who can say i haven’t heard of any one ever playing or talking about it.
Kishimoto used 2 have a personal website (as of like last year) with a cool subpage that had details/screenshots of unreleased games ( ć¾ć ć¾ć ć‚ć‚‹ć‚ˆļ¼§ļ¼”ļ¼ļ¼„ć‚½ćƒ•ćƒˆļ¼) also used to have a scrolling pro-Trump banner on the home page next to some sort of rant-style youtuber video so perhaps it may be for the best if these games diverge away from his notions.

Ooh I didn’t know about SCKS = o

But even back in the day, Technos Japan never really managed a great DD follow-up. Maybe the closest in spirit, to me, to a true DD sequel somehow is DDII on GB, a made-over JP GB Kunio game.

i think Super/Return of Double Dragon is the last good DD game produced from that era

Double Dragon Advance improves on it (but it’s on GBA so i have a hard time revisiting it because i can’t stomach GBA as much these days)

also i can’t exactly tell which DD game we are referencing previously; i assume DD4? if we mean the ones i just mentioned, ignore my redundant comment.

I dunno about anyone else, I was referencing the original arcade Double Dragon.

SDD didn’t hit me the right way. The DDA director had worked on SDD and wanted to correct some things he saw as problems in SDD with DDA. DDA plays well but it’s a slightly overlarded homage/pastiche/remake rather than a true follow-up sequel type of thing.

weird visual style, it’s like exaggerated ps1 polygon warping in a ps2 game

I’m wondering if Microsoft released Redfall early on purpose and had Phil Spencer do his whole media apology tour because they saw the merger blockage coming and want MSFT gaming to look ā€œweakerā€ to better facilitate the merger. I mean probably not but like, dang.

I wonder whats happened with the ā€œAAAAā€ studio The Initiative and where their progress is with that fuckin… Perfect Dark game.

Introducing Phil Spencer to Cocaine and getting us a Crimson Skies reboot, Viva Pinata revival. ā€œGaming is back babyā€ he says at The Game Awards

Simplified NPCs that don’t even have moving mouths or fingers look so good and it’s a shame that the only premise in which they work is through a purely nostalgic lens

Nothing against this game. It looks good. Just thinking about how I would like some of these tendencies to expand out and become their own legitimate forms of design that can stand on their own
