I was gonna mention Strive and the other arcsys 3d fighters, but not necessarily for their cel shading, rather because they play with each character’s (or other element) perspective projection independently to make the 2d effect more convincing which I’m sure would help a lot with platformers too (it’s used and works well in Mega Man 11 for example).
i’d guess this happens bc companies tend to have large teams/pipelines to make 3D graphics already, but they don’t have the resources or talent on hand to make a full game’s worth of 2D assets.
also idk if it’s still true, but when i tried to use Unity like 10 years ago it was significantly more finicky to make a 2D game in it than a 3D game. the tools were all built around 3D.
adrian chmielarz (the creative director for this game) was a big gamergate guy and believes women are biologically predisposed to playing specific genres because he’s a fucking moron. i got into a big spat with him around that time for his shitheaded behavior. make what you will of this information.
chmielarz put himself (and, by extension, his studio) in a, hm, unusual position: he actually spent most of the time since 2014 posting anti-right wing government content and liberal pieties on his facebook account, but since he’s one of the most incredibly bullheaded developers in the industry and someone who compares public apologies and admissions of being wrong to spilling one’s blood among sharks, he will keep pretending gamergate never happened unless the recent outcry about his support for it becomes too large to ignore comfortably. summarizing his personality as “joe rogan who would have voted for obama for a third term if he could” wouldn’t be far from the truth, I refuse to read his posts anymore for the reasons outlined in nietzsche’s most overused adage
