As far as I know, the âAAAâ credit-rating jargon was never used in its literal meaning in the game industry (very few publishers have a rating higher than BBB, let alone that high). It seems rather to have originated as a metaphor in investor pitches to hyperbolically imply (without quite saying anything fraudulent) that a proposed videogame was absolutely guaranteed to pay them back. But yeah.

it rocks that ea is letting themselves get corporate raided by jared kushner and the saudis because they think they can beat 20 billion dollars of inherited debt. have fun when your new buddies in private equity strip everything of value out of the walls and it catches up with you!

problem is there are never any losers among the decision makers in a PE buyout, which is why it keeps happening. the PE firm dumps the debt on the company and resells after cashing out all the assets, and the management/investors of the firm being raided get to cash out their stake in the sale. the employees lose. the nebulous âconsumerâ loses. like everything that creates âwealthâ in america post 2008, it generates no value. itâs a tool to transfer numbers from the material world to the financial world
hopefully some of the IP that EA has systematically hoovered up and destroyed over the last 30 years can be loosened from their grip, at least. I would say that anyone theoretically working on any of those names will be shuttered, but outside of the husks of bioware and maxis that already happened anyway. the properties will probably just be slurped up by faceless holding companies
