@notbov honestly I wish Nintendo and everyone would wait like Bethesda and announce new only months from release. The paitence helps I think so we don’t hear promises turn to lies and overall I think we get something better when they hold back a little.

@CourierRice that review was excellent despite him using ‘metroidvania’ in there. I think he has awesome vids, but I’m bias, on the other hand he just won some awards: https://www.spj.org/kunkel-winners.asp

One day, one day, people will use “metroidvania” to describe “games that lump together popular mechanics in lieu of actual artistic vision.” Like Watch_Dogs.

Isn’t that what the “RPG elements” bulletpoint is for?

(I will also accept “metagame” when used in proximity to “deep”)

I’m fine with all of these, though my option attempts to take down two birds with one stone. And one of the birds is the stone.

This game actually seems pretty cool

Oh! And a cool Wiiware game and its sequel are on Steam now:

I think if I were going to do VR it would have to be from like a first person perspective or in a cockpit or something like in Eve: Valkyrie or that new Battlezone. Just using my head to move the camera around while controlling a character with a controller doesn’t sound very interesting.

At the same time it seems like it would be weird to play an FPS where you have the sense of being there moving around in the game but in reality you know you’re still just sitting in a chair. I guess I’m just talking about what it would take for me personally to be able to get really immersed in the whole “VR experience” thing. Like, playing a game like that new Descent-alike would do it for me or maybe a racing game or something. A game were you’re walking around would probably make me want to actually get up and walk around for real.

Man I need to find a demo unit for one of these VR devices somewhere. I can remember going to the store in 1993 or whenever and playing Super Mario World on a demo SNES unit that was set up. They need to do that with VR so more people can try it.

Nintendo has promised absolutely nothing about the NX beyond its future existence at some unknown time, so it’s hard to see what might turn into a lie. We were even having a debate about whether it was going to be a pure tablet or a console. They gave word of the NX being a thing as part of one of their mobile game announcements, as a way to mollify core gamers they were afraid might feel abandoned.

reading this I had the vision of an alternate timeline where Molyneux ended being an hardware developer

Nintendo is on the record that 1)there is a thing they’re making called the NX and 2)we’ll see it sometime this year, most likely at E3 since that lined was dropped by Reggie in last years E3 video. I imagine the dam will break early eventually what with the events of the past year (Iwata’s passing mainly, the so-far accurate leak showing a fall launch and Zelda NX) and the upcoming investors meeting. That Nintendo would blink first in the face of the market and consumer base would be a surprise though.

Speaking of Molyneux, my mind was blown that the director of the Google team that built the Go champion AI is the very same guy who wrote the creature AI for Black & White. At least somebody associated with Molyneux is delivering.

Now I’m a little sad we didn’t get that. I also want to play Shin Megami Tensei IV again. Not enough Carpenter vibes to go around.

that looks okay but it’d be nice if the HUD was a little bigger

Do the Chinese just go into shock if they play a game without giant floating damage numbers or something?
