Nintendo actually has nearly as many Wii U releases on the calendar for NA this year as they did for 2015, which is pretty impressive since all evidence points to them putting out some kind of nebulous game machine by the end of the year

Generations is MHX, Bill Trinen literally said the Japanese title before presenting it. The RPG is Stories and isn’t out yet and it’s also some multimedia dealie so will probably see the cartoon before we see the game

Fuck yeah horse solitaire. This was legit the thing that excited me most about the Nintendo Direct (and I actually plan to buy MOST of the games they showed).
So, bundling Night Trap Tower Defense Fox with the Star Fox Zero game for no additional money must mean they have very little faith in one or both, right?

Possibility one: I’m guessing the tower defense game is kinda lame, but a little surprised they didn’t try to sell it as a cheap eShop release and still charge full price for Zero.

Possibility two: They’re a little worried about Zero. I’ve seen some criticism of the graphics, and I don’t really care but some people do. The presentation today seemed like Miyamoto was really trying to convince people there’s enough of a game there via multiple paths and replayability. Maybe that’s a nice way of saying "we know people are gonna blow through this game and get an ending in a couple hours then bitch like crazy. Again, not really an issue for me (I just noted in the STG thread that Raiden V’s approximately one hour start to finish time was too long for my liking), but I can definitely see this being a thing people seize on to complain about, so the reminders to play different paths and that HEY GUYS THERE’S A WHOLE FREE BONUS GAME seems a little suspicious to me.
My other tinfoil hat Nintendo Direct comment:
Haven’t seen anyone else mention that they very deliberately worded the My Nintendo coins/points thing by saying you gain coins in two ways: (1) “Play apps” and (2) “Purchase digital games”. DIGITAL games, implying no credit for buying physical games.
Nintendo has always been very conservative with their reluctance to create supply for physical games. Like most publishers, they like online purchases that eliminate the second-hand market and reduce risk of overstocked games. They intentionally do low print runs even of decently high profile first party games (lots of first party 3DS releases have been hard to find at launch, a couple examples: FE Awakening, Luigi’s Mansion 2, obviously the recent shitstorm of FE Fates LE). Nintendo has also always been accused of creating artificial shortages, something fairly obvious for anyone who payed any attention to the Wii launch or Amiibo.
But… I think this might go beyond just trying to encourage eShop purchases over physical, and might be an early indication that the NX will do away with distribution of games on physical media. Who knows whether it will go over better than the Xbox One’s attempts (which may have been made worse simply due to their awful marketing strategy), but it does feel like it’s in keeping with Nintendo’s priorities. And they’ve felt a little less like they’re willing to bow down to the retail industry anyway for sales; from the last several years of frosty relationship with Amazon, to perhaps a sense of insult that the Gamestops of the world haven’t really highlighted Wii U and 3DS so much, to a potential attitude (which probably isn’t wrong) of “we’re Nintendo and first party stuff is 99% of the reason people buy our systems, they’ll come to US”.
Oh god yes. That site has been utter trash for at least a couple years now, both in content and in a truly awful site design (works like shit on mobile and iPad, and from a structure/user experience perspective it’s pretty bad even on a desktop browser).
Even when they did have some halfway decent content a couple years back they’d do bizarre things like insist on translating Japanese words in Japanese game titles - e.g. Cave’s Akai Katana, which they called “Red Katana” (or the remixed “Shin Red Katana”, in which they selectively translated ONE of the three Japanese origin words in the title…).
Or write uninformed “business analysis” posts with asinine logic, like insisting that high “sell through percentage” was an extremely meaningful and positive statistic for how well a game was performing at retail, instead of just a measure of supply not really meeting demand for MANY possible reasons. For instance, something like Nintendo’s chronically (intentionally) low production runs, as I discussed in connection with the Direct (gee, I wonder why they have a high “sell through” number when they intentionally short obvious demand).
But yeah, every time I inexplicably check the site these days the quality of the writing is atrocious and the amount of no value posts is incredibly high. Gematsu is far better in every way for the kind of coverage Siliconera - or Andriasang when it was around - used to do a pretty good job of providing.
