MUWT 2: The Quickening

Just read the synopsis for his movie, Adventures of a Dentist.

A dentist is derided (and eventually has his life ruined) by his colleagues for his natural talent of painlessly pulling out teeth.

So now I know what I’m doing today.

Yeah! I’m glad you finally got to see it. It’s a legitimately gorgeous movie on top of being the only honest war movie

Jesus that Charlie Kaufman movie was a piece of shit

I fell asleep during it, woke up, hit my head on the wall behind me waking up, and fell asleep again

They talk about Anna Kavan’s Ice, so it’s the greatest film I’ve ever personally seen.

I’m a man of my word. This movie was perfect for a Sunday morning.

I’ve never wanted to have someone else’s room as much as I want his.

The songs in the movie, written by Novella Matveyeva and lip synced by Alisa Friendlich, are really good.

The humor here is really dry but goes well with the absurd premise. I just want to give Chesnokov a hug.

I don’t know how you make this movie and Come and See but I suppose a lot can change in 20 years.

oh no! I saw this new one compared to Synecdoche, New York, which sits alongside Barton Fink in my secret closet of solipsistic creative loathing parades but Anomalisa just didn’t work for me. I think I really dig that belly-button-picking voice applied to work but not romance.

i do think it’s that voice applied to work and not romance, and i think felix is being a little harsh, but it is pretty god damn inscrutable

charlie kaufman is making a strong effort to embody chaotic schrader energy and even though i’ll never engage with any of this stuff seriously i kind of admire it from afar

it’s agonizingly overwritten given what could be a good premise and strong performances, the most leaden magic

Finally watched Snowpiercer, what a fuckin movie!! Holy shit. Just absolutely wild tonal shifts throughout, shockingly violent, very funny. Absolutely captivating film. Now I gotta see Parasite.

Love the fakeout near the end where the sushi foreshadowing is implying that the train guy is eating kids. The camera just keeps looking at the steak meaningfully. Then the kid is underneath a tile, in the machinery, just taking out gunk forever. Somehow even worse than being eaten is being used as an almost literal cog in a machine. Fantastic.

now i long for someone to rediscover an episode of Rugrats, like they did with Duck Tales and Inception, where the babies show up Nolan at what he thinks is his own game.

In this case, I think Nolan was getting outdone by Red Dwarf Season 3 episode 1, “Backwards”

I saw Mulan and I’m sure this won’t surprise anyone but it’s so bad! Ignoring all the meta-controversies of the film (there are many), the emotional stories and characters don’t make any sense. You can’t just waste Gong Li’s time like this. $200,000,000! ~1,000 cast and crew! For what?

It’s amazing that Disney dumps so much money into these live action remakes and they still manage to be the most utterly boring fucking shit to look at. The editing in that movie is fucking awful.

I couldn’t get over how bad the lighting was in some shots. It was on par with a high school theater production, just this bad, artificial glow. It’s easy to make Xinjiang and Gansu look beautiful, so I refuse to give any kudos for that.
