it’s essential to understand that they’re extremely gay and sexy, and also that he’s a communist
I recommend starting with collateral
The movies are very masculine. Mann is not for everyone, I’ve found every movie I’ve seen of him (Heat, Public Enemies, Collateral) watchable but predictable and unexciting
miami vice
blackhat
the last 15 minutes of mohicans
heat
thief
collateral
the insider
ali
manhunter
the rest of mohicans
public enemies
Rudie bursts in with opinions. Collateral is greatttttt.
Didn’t like Thief at all. James Caan starts with getting kickout for cheating on his wife and then treats the side-hussle like crap as well then we are supposed to like his bank robbery and neon at night driving around.
Then uhh…unlike the rest of this forum I find Miami Vice like kryptonite.
The insider was also dope.
Ali’s ultiimately a failed experiment but the opening montage is the best experience I’ve ever had in a theater. Absolutely sublime.
manhunter is too low on everyone’s lists
nevermind the 2160p is 2160p60
also this shit looks like quantum break
She thought he was cheating on her because he was doing robberies and this is all off screen and prior to the movie and before he meets tuesday weld and why he is immediately up front about being a thief to her
i clearly need to rewatch Miami Vice because i remember seeing it in high school and finding it borderline incomprehensible
It did introduce my friends and i to “go-fast boats” which i still think is a hilarious name for a boat that Colin Farrell says very, very seriously. and quickly, and gruffly, between lots of stuff i could only interpret as “[?? cop dialogue?? ?]”
“THEY CALL THEM GO-FAST BOATS BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT THEY CALL THEM! THEY’RE REALLY CALLED GO-FAST BOATS!” -me, for all those long wilderness years before The Culture At Large started coming around on Miami Vice, every time I ran face-first into someone making fun of Miami Vice and specifically “go-fast boats”
I’ve always been a wiz at emotional regulation.
mann’s movies are core samples. all the characters even minor ones are all well developed and researched and built out and whatnot offscreen, then you’re thrown into this specific intense moment of time in their lives and world with all their jargon and tools and methods and whatnot with no explanation. it’s like lynch, emotionally intuiting the experiences playing out on screen is what he’s going for, if you need more context though mann is not david lynch in that he’s more than happy to tell you all about vincents abusive childhood or miami pd procedure or what specifically is actually going on in a scene on the commentary tracks.
i think about this every day forever
god love that very last shot
i love that it was an offcut from an earlier scene because jamie foxx bailed on shooting, there’s no way the intended ending could have been so perfect
yes exactly!!
I’ve only ever seen Heat and Collateral and dug both without any real lasting opinions, but it would seem I clearly need to Mann Up here.
fastboat isnt any sillier than speedboat, i never understood when people made fun of that specific thing
but yeah michael manns movies are manly for the mans man
speaking of digital michael mann
