i respect the sandman making these kinds of movies but for me everything i’ve heard about the safdie brothers movies makes them sound totally repellant and aggravating

like thing of indie movies being about horrible people making bad choices and then dying was something i was glad died out with the last generation of people trying to be tarantino, i’m not ready for it to be revived again

I saw an article explaining that Aster was specifically asked to create a movie involving a festival like that with murders, and he accepted after deciding that he could combine that with other themes that he’d wanted to make a movie about.

the thing i liked is you absolutely know hes going to fucking die. like 10 minutes in you’re like ‘god this asshole is going to die i know it! we all know it!’ and its how the movie uses sound and scenery and voices to play on top of that anxiety of the looming death. just every time he turns a corner, every time a door is opened. ALLL THE TIME ALWAYS. ANXIETY

it helps that the movie is over two hours too. because for the last 25 minutes your movie watcher body is telling you the end HAS TO COME SOON so you squirm around in your chair as it just gets worse and worse

i used to always have nightmares where a monster would be running after me, and id realize it was a dream and give up and let the monster eat me. even after i knew it was a dream it was horrifying

this movies like this except i know its a nightmare the whole time and i cant wake up and i loved it and i will never see it again i might listen to a couple of songs off the soundtrack. oh id watch it on a date with someone who hasnt seen it before in like 10 years maybe

I didn’t get stressed out watching uncut gems because I decided instead I was going to think of it from his perspective and he just wants to risk as much as he can constantly, so I’m just watching someone who follows different rules have a good time living their own way. and then at the end, what a nice thing, he’s trying to explain and share his experience with someone

Ari Aster on Midsommar: ‘I Really Don’t Know What I’ve Done’

Midsommar was an assignment from a Swedish production company. How did you balance the prefab concept with all the personal stuff you eventually brought to it?
I had never before written anything for hire and I can’t really imagine myself doing it again. But this was about four years ago, and the producers came to me with a broad idea for this folk-horror movie about American tourists going to Sweden and them being killed off during Midsummer. And the comps were like, Hostel . They had read the script for Hereditary and they basically came to me saying, “We’d love for you to do what you did with Hereditary with this concept.” My first instinct was to pass on it, because it’s not necessarily a subgenre that I felt compelled to work in. But I was going through a breakup at the time, and I wanted to write a breakup movie.

So as an exercise, I sat with the idea and I said, “Okay, is there a way to, like, take the money and find a way to smuggle a breakup movie into this?” And for me, the way in was: for the guys in the movie, this is a folk-horror movie, but for the protagonist — for Dani, who I was kind of making a surrogate for myself — it’s a wish-fulfillment fantasy, it’s like a fairy tale.
