Heck yeah, I just rewatched this movie last month and had a great time! I love that it crams in so many random side-stories. I like the whole arc with the ghost woman. I wonder whether the sequels are any good.
Fun Uncut Gems trivia:
theyāre apparently unrelated plot wise but (some of them at least?) have the same actor who plays the main master priest guy (lam ching-ying) in similar roles. iām pretty sure playing a vampire-fighting badass is the only thing he ever did
mr. vampire 2 is an unofficial ET remake
itās good
Whoa
Mr vampire is so good
reading up on this movie is driving home the point that this isnāt a fever dream, but actually happened, including its subtle, but notable usage of SFX that added to the experience.
One to watch if someone hasnāt seen that movie.
The last movie that made me feel like this was Running Scared
the safdie bros. are too good for A24. dont ask me what that means cause i dont know
I just got back from Uncut Gems and that movie felt like sixth grade.
I know that doesnāt make any sense but my life at age 11 was lots of NBA. Lots of driving around New York while listening to sports talk radio. Lots of time spent in bars and restaurants around very New York degenerates. A fair amount of socializing with rich kids who probably would have had very extensive sofubi collections if such things existed at the time. Probably watched my siblings have loud violent public breakups like the one in this film on a weekly basis. Also nearly everyone I knew was chasing that dream just like Howard and heck Iām doing it too ā every single time I sell a book on eBay or get a new patron or someone buys art off me I say āIām cummingā and gain the courage/means to place that next bet, on myself, or a very cool model kit.
So I never felt tense cuz this whole thing felt like home. This was real āhangoutitudeā. Do we still say that? Well even if we donāt this made me feel kinda nostalgic so I will use a phrase that some folks may find nostalgic to describe how it made me feel. I was the dumb asshole who kept fidgeting and giggling throughout the movie because I found everything incredibly funny, and everyone in the theater had to deal with that shit cuz I was sitting in the front row. For some reason this place stripped out all the proper theater seats and replaced them with couches and chairs and a rug? I donāt think this place is even a year old so replacing all your seats with shit you bought at Ikea sure seems foolish to me. But what do I knowā¦!
I had a mustache like Howardās son, but mine was better, and richer, as Iād been working on it since I was 5.
I am not interested in criticism but I am interested in remembering things, sometimes.
They had fuckinā John Amos on screen for like 10 seconds so I wouldnāt be the slightest bit surprised if that was intentional.
Francesca and Garnett were better than Sandler Iām sure we can all agree they should get nominated for some good awards.
yeah i feel like i should be too west coast for the movie but instead it added to my enjoyment
now that i think if it though⦠yes. every time i went to manhattan it was the same kind of stress that i felt in the movie. i cant handle new york at all. i always think about that time i tried to smile and say hello while walking by someone and they YELLED AT ME. THERE IS NO YELLOW MUSTARD. i love movies about it, though
also i laughed a tonnnn it was really funny! i probably annoyed people BUT I PAID FOR MY TICKET (my partner paid for my ticket MY TICKET WAS PAID FOR)
daphny and I were the only ones cracking up in the theatre Iām pretty sure
my uncut gems take: eric bogosian delivers some good glares
i laughed at a bunch of shit but i also spent like, the last 20 minutes of the movie on the edge of my fucking seat so
i watched the remaster of a better tomorrow and the sound effects were bugging me, turns out they redid all of them with a stock sound library so the entire movie sounds like max payne 2 now which is kind of funny but really fucks up some of the scenes. thereās a big brawl in a taxi garage that has non-stop GENERIC_PUNCH.wav sounds playing and itās ridiculous. the rest of the remaster is pretty good though, itās a better transfer than most - they advertise it being 4k though it isnāt. so i checked my blu-rays of the killer and hard boiled to see if they had the original audio (i think they do) and ended up watching the entire hospital sequence of hard boiled instead. i am truly that bitch
I think the better tomorrow remaster and a japanese bluray release of hardboiled are the only classic woo movies to get non-dogshit bluray releases so far. donāt know why somebody hasnāt muxed in the audio from a release with the original sound effects to put out a definitive version online yet
the killer needs a remaster but at least the current bluray isnāt 1080i and 30fps anymore
The blu-ray I have of hard boiled seemed OK but Iām not sure what release it was ripped from. I would probably be interested in getting a copy of the japanese release of it. I think the problem with remuxing the better tomorrow remaster is that a lot of the versions of it floating around on DVD and online have fucked up audio to begin with, either the sound effects or the original voice track or soundtrack being missing. it would be cool if someone did it though! i briefly considered trying my hand at it but I canāt even fucking find a copy that doesnāt have issues or isnāt just the remaster to download. I found good versions of Bullet in the Head and City on Fire today at least which was nice
Mad Dog with the Thompson Contender is my religion
i watched the payback directorās cut aka the original cut and i was pleased that itās nothing but character actors playing huge unlikable assholes (and mel gibson playing himself) the entire time. pretty good
