the necornomicon ex cornus – the book of the corn.

i thought i hadn’t seen this one – “urban harvest” didn’t sound familiar – but i’m pretty sure i’ve seen this. good lord, “t-loc”.

look at that beautiful chicago skyline – i’ve always said my favorite thing about chicago and easily the most identifiable thing about the city are the palm trees.

sorry, my creepy, possessive corn-brother doesn’t like it when i play basketball with other men that aren’t him. i’m going to hear about this in bed tonight.

I’d like to thank this website for persuading me to watch Blackhat.

This was just the icing on the cake but the movie’s representation of computer usage and methods of hacking were entirely plausible. Love it when a movie is about Real Things.

Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is currently included with Amazon Prime, for anyone who happens to have that and might be interested in seeing it. (it’s good.)

Saw a preview screening of The Last Voyage of the Demeter and I really enjoyed it.

We’ve been looking forward to this one so I’m glad to hear it’s actually good!

More genre savy people seemed to dislike it but I enjoyed seeing character actors deal with the situation. It was more brutal than I expected.

watching The Sea Beast again and thinking about what I wrote about the character designs in Strange World

Sarah Sharpe has cheekbones that could cut your throat, and she never takes her hat off. she’d make you wish you’d never been born if you disobeyed one of the captain’s orders & she hates children

really appreciating how much Moby Dick is in this. also found out that the monster concept artwork was designed by Guy Davis (The Marquis comic)

i watched how to make a monster (2001) bc its about videogame developers who create an evil animatronic guy after lightning strikes the server containing the ai model they built out of every search engine result for the word “evil” (video montage of hitler, charles manson etc). theres a part where clea duvall from but i’m a cheerleader says “game on” and then swordfights the monster both irl and ingame while wearing vr goggles and gloves, and then after killing it she looks down at an ingame puddle and sees that she… is the real monster… well i mean the skeeviest thing the three movie game devs do is make someone jump around naked so they can mocap her breasts which i’m pretty sure david cage does as a matter of course so i guess i can’t argue with the filmmakers there. john you are the demons.
theres also a part where the evil games executive tries to kill an intern with a crossbow and i’m not saying this is something lord british has done personally but he does keep trying to go to space where there are no extradition treaties for that kind of thing. something to think about

it has one of those end credits songs where i’m p sure they just handed a list of keywords to someone on the 2001 equivalent of fiverr and had them come up with a song about it. theres a part where the singer talks about having someones chess pieces in the palm of her hand and i wasnt sure if it was a callback to a plot-crucial palm pilot that everybodys looking for at one point

TMNT Mutant Mayhem was good

it’s also the most 2023 movie possible: the words “sus” and “rizz” are in the script, Don is into Attack on Titan and JoJos and overlaying audio for Tiktok memes is shown

we’re going to be referencing this film as a historical document generations down the line

I think for the longest time cinephiles were more into wanking over the Kubrick-Spielberg Guessing Game when thematically it resonates harder than Rutger Hauer finally becoming still

Watched Barbie in the cinema again. Also watched Oruorane the Cat Player after Tulpa revealed it to me. I cannot get the music from either film out of my head.

If it makes you feel any better, we’re so far away from this happening that this is for all intents and purposes a purely theoretical question

Watched both parts of the international version of Red Cliff over the weekend and got super pumped about seeing Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, who are sorta background characters in the movie.

I wondered if this was how some of my Tolkien loving friends felt watching the LotR stuff.

I think AI is great in its entirety & despite not seeing it for years i referenced it like three days ago with a friend who was feeling distraught about having to put a Nintendog in a kennel

Been watching ninja movies lately. The three best so far are:

  1. Super Ninja: Extremely violent ninja exploitation movie about how it’s a white people’s world (takes place in America), and that’s why the Five Element Ninjas are dealing drugs and framing innocent Chinese kung fu cops. Feral and deranged racial politics, where white people are only bad (true) and the Chinese actor is friends with a black guy (nice) but the dub for the partner is a racist white-guy-doing-black-guy accent (yikes) and there’s a brief “how could you betray me for the white man’s favor!” subplot (mega-oof) that exists just to make the partners fight once. Also every woman exists to be sexually menaced. The big bad says “Yes, I’m a murderer, and a would-be rapist too!” Pure sleaze, but I like sleaze in film even as I hate it in real life. I’m a walking contradiction I suppose. Some great fights in this and insane torture scenes where the white cops wrap metal chains around the hero’s neck and whack his shins with clubs.
  2. Secret Ninja, Roaring Tiger: Godfrey Ho and Dragon Lee are such a power collaboration; everything I’ve seen with both of them is pretty good! Dragon Lee wins a martial arts tournament for the hand of a local rich guy’s daughter, but a ninja society kidnaps her and reveals a deeper intrigue involving mistaken birth and murdered masters. In the end, the two competition guys team up to defeat the head ninja. Fun and light kung fu with multiple comedy moments, minimal sleaze, and a cool lady ninja. Junk food.
  3. Ninja in the Deadly Trap: Japanese marauders are laying waste to coastal Chinese towns, and employing ninjas to assassinate anyone who tries to stop them, particularly this one Chinese general. His son enlists the help of 3 kung fu masters to protect his father against ninja treachery. There’s precisely one mostly-ignored woman in this movie (noticing a misogyny pattern?) but at least she isn’t sexually menaced. The kung fu guys are charmers, and the second half of the film is basically Survival Horror In The World Of Ninja, where we see careful setup and payoff of the ninja plots to kill the general. Better than I expected, especially since it’s the goriest of the three listed here; faces get melted off, hands dismembered, people decapitated and disemboweled.

I watched like 4 other ninja movies but they are all unremarkable Godfrey Ho cut-n-paste shitfests. I really want to see a supercut of all Richard Harrison ninja scenes in those movies, like as its own movie.
