okay actually maybe you should watch the Town Called Panic movie

it contains some of my favorite stupid sight gags (at one point, an entire house is cut free from its supports underwater and the reaction to this is it falling to the seafloor and then catching on fire for a split second)

okay it’s funny that I recommended both of these movies because I remembered that they actually share directors and that’s why I saw E&C to begin with

Saw Jan Svankmeijer’s Alice and loved it. What am incredible child actress–she is really good at extremely funny horrified/angry stares, particularly in the second half of the movie when she begins to master and even fight back against the dream logic around her. Perfect transformation into the kind of kid who refuses to take shit from any gross stop motion taxidermy.

The White Rabbit is incredible in this one too. It is SUCH an asshole and has so much personality! There is a scene where Alice surprises it inside a tiny house and it immediately starts throwing plates at her… its personality and their relationship were both super clear and legible despite the constant absurdist turbulence of the plot, and I was really impressed to find myself going “Aww man! That guy again!! What a cad!!” as if I too was a resident of this bizarre little world, fully on board with its sawdust-and-puppets logic. Absolutely the best stop motion shit I’ve ever seen.

I gotta watch it sometime again because the copy I was using had some subtitle and encoding errors and didn’t always play subtitles when it should have. There were a ton of little problem frames we had to advance past as well. Added an extra layer of enigma for me but I do wish I knew what they were talking about those times, haha.

conspirators of pleasure is the perfect movie to show aliens to be like ‘this is how you understand human desire’

yeah I also got my hands on a collection of his early shorts. There’s some amazing ones in there. it’s very interesting to me how certain parts of his visual style remain unchanged across decades of his creative career… the toys look just as ancient and the sets are just as dilapidated in his 50s as they were in his 30s. The vision of a dirty paint-peeling childhood is so consistent I can’t help but admire it

are there other movies about mentally ill women living their dream with a financial windfall like welcome to me and ingrid goes west?

it was really funny watching daisies and finding out the communist party banned it because they waste too much food in it

PARIYERUM PERUMAL BA.BL (2018)

me to Mari Selvaraj

I’m not gonna spoil anything, except maybe a CW for unexpected violence. just watch this movie. absolutely unbelievable. five stars

usually I finish the movie and read a bunch of reviews but not really doing that with this one cuz it feels like I got it 100%

One thing I should note is that his name “Pariyerum Perumal” which the movie translates as the Perumal (Vishnu) who rides on a horse is I think almost certainly a reference to Kalki, the prophesied tenth avatar of Vishnu, whose purpose will be to appear on a white horse and destroy the Kali Yuga aka the age of injustice, and thereby return the world to an age of justice. a clever piece of thematic resonance imo

also, nothing like watching a lot of tamil movies where people burst through doors with sticks and rocks to make you notice how incredibly telegraphed violence in western cinema is by comparison. something incredibly effective about the randomness and brutality of the violence in this - guns seem sanitized by comparison

Sweet & Sour (Netflix)

long distance relationship: the movie
… plus: work as an external contractor, traffic in Seoul, a Creepy Cupid Security Guard and — what the hell did i Just Watch :tarothink:

we did this. oh my god, the French VA is phenomenal. I’d laugh as soon as someone started delivering their lines. favourite sight gags was Gérard playing a 2 of clubs while saying, “4 Aces! I win!” “again?”

perfect stupid escalation. I appreciate Lord & Miller’s dumb plots but this blows the lego movie 2 out of the water. plus! an actual father-child dynamic that’s appropriate and entertaining! despite the constant ludicrous avoidable mistakes, no one gets mad at each other for doing them, only reacting to the act with acceptance & without judgement. except Steven, he needs to lay off the coffee

yeah the formula of two fuck ups and a meddling kid is always charming but it’s misogynist in the way that men are when they don’t think women are around and it grates

it would have been 100x better if after gosling promised his daughter he’d find the film, he didn’t find the film, and his daughter runs him over with the car she has to drive for him all the time. like there was no fucking repercussions for his child neglect and alcoholism. honk honk funny clown drunk man

the scene where he punches the window was the best part
