yeah I can’t decide whether to make my best bug lance into dragon at the end of the upgrade path or make the one last bump to keep it paralysis
this has stopped me from trying to fight the last two dragons
I should make another bug lance

oh nooooo
I have taken a break from progression right now to level up a good fire and a good ice bow, and neither of these was a bad decision because they are both magnificent.
I probably should get back to beating the story though.
The secret to the knives is to bring stuff like poison/paralysis/sleep mushrooms or herbs to combine with the knives and they become a status knife to throw. Usually three or for will cause a status to activate for most monsters.
It’s really interesting to me how light the rewards for grinding better gear are, and how weak the perks are. Current design trends (past 10 years or so) are for substantial, noticeable perks instead of very slight stat adjustments, and I don’t think Monster Hunter’s old-school system is better, but that loop is still extremely compelling. I believe this is due to the very consistent communication of expected rewards and chained tier-upgrades, so the player can plan goals and organically add mini-goals:
“I want to fight this hard monster, which is weak to fire, but my fire weapon is underleveled. So, what do I need to upgrade my fire weapon? Oh, I need to fight the Anjanath. Let’s see, she’s weak to – ok, so I’ll upgrade my secondary weapon to help with her. Oh, but if I fight one more Jyuratodus I can upgrade my lightning weapon, which will let me…”
When in reality, upgrading a fire weapon instead of using a same-tier normal weapon will shave off maybe 5 hits from a 100-hit monster! And it’s even more obvious with damage numbers exposed, but it doesn’t diminish this loop.
They’re similar epicycles of opportunistic goals that 4X games rely on (and they power the best moments in the game I work on, with the world state evolving past failure to create new opportunities).
I have noticed this too and I’m substantially more ambivalent about it – I want to meet the game’s success condition of having satisfactorily-upgraded weapons because mastery within a set of rules is fun but I often can’t justify the grinding under the circumstances so I just pass on it and feel less gratified than I might otherwise.
I so rarely indulge like this in the first place though it’s clear they’re doing a lot of things right.
I’m surprised that they removed the ability to craft deep into a tree, which Monster Hunter 4 had (my main prior experience); it was just more parts-expensive than upgrading a prior piece. I feel silly building a Bone I weapon again and again. But having the tree exposed is a godsend (before you could only see the upgrades for a currently-selected weapon).
I suppose with you could take the knowledge of the weak upgrade benefits and feel comfortable with what you’ve got – as long as you’ve got the right tier weapon, the game doesn’t care. Or, it’s room for self-expression.
I would kill for a “Build this weapon and auto build all the previous weapons” option so I wouldn’t have to jump between the upgrade window to the build window or vice versa.
it’s funny how they have that for item crafting but not weapons
imo being able to downgrade + refund parts used in crafting is wonderful and more games that do this sort of thing should do this
Think I’m a handful of missions away from “the end”, but damn does this surge in coop/Squad play keep me hungerin’.
Trying to make better use of aux items, getting a tad more creative with dung flinging and bow stringing. I’m a bit tired of Legiana atm though, want that GEM.
if you do the weekly bounties you get a gold ticket that can meld into any gem you want !!
Go to to play with a few of y’all yesterday aft and boy oh boy that was gun as heck. I guess i didn’t know but I am terrible at this. @anothersphere that was my first time using CB in a hunt and I will not be doing that again, v sry
Took out pink rathian today. Progress has slowed to a halt while I try to catch up on weapon upgrades (I fucking want that frostreaver. Legiana can eat me.) and tool around with my swaxe build. I like it, but I clearly don’t know what I’m doing and I’m starting to feel like I’m doing builds wrong. Tried to build something all purpose and its not feeling doable anymore. It is a little frustrating to have to go back to low rank to farm material for elemental weapons
Still fun though :3
Ahhhh pretty sure I missed the last one and didn’t see that’s a meld for it, nice!
No worries @la_ciel, don’t think I got to see how you wielded it - the couple times I’ve tried had me getting stomped. I still feel inefficient with the Long Sword even after using it for my first few dozen missions.
OK I just grinded a few barroths and rathaloses to get my last two endgame bosses open and effectively max out most of my gear (to the point where my defence is over 300 and the skills I have actually feel somewhat well chosen for the first time) and that felt pretty good. Glad I didn’t walk away just yet! The blast kinsect rules btw, he’s like an extra bow user.
Did one of the two fights, only one left.
i was burgin it up at the deli down the street (you can get a decent cheeseburger and the best goddamn fries in Salem for $5, it’s the tits) and a guy came in and was shooting the shit with one of the dudes behind the counter, saying that his girlfriend was going to be mad at him for playing too much PS4 that night. The counter dude was like “you can put down your PS4 for one damn night” and the guy was like “you don’t understand Diego, i’m hunting monsters all week and my guild is stuck on this one rank!” and Diego was like “man i’m glad i have no idea what you’re talking about”
i tell this story not because it’s interesting (hoo boy no) but because of how utterly weird it is to overhear people talking about MonHun like, in real life and not at an anime convention.
I hope all you hunters are living out your anime dreams…
and because I can’t pick just one music video:
just had a fantastic kushala daora fight, it was my first try and it was taking a while, first time in the whole game it seemed conceivable we’d run out of time (it was just two of us for a long time, then we got a third person toward the end), and the last 60 seconds involved me healing from 10% health with my last max potion, me knocking him out of the sky with my last flash pod, and me finishing him off with a fully-charged insect glaive combo

The best hairdo crew.
yeah a bunch of people at my work are playing this and the one dude that’s been into the series since the original is on cloud nine
