Do an expedition when the Lynian researcher is in the area; talk to him and doodles will start showing up. Collect enough and you should be able to see the Lynians on the map; go to them and they’ll give you a quest. Complete it and–!
The Wildspire gadget (blind & shock traps) is my favorite; I don’t feel the Coral gadget (taunting/aggro pull/blocking) taking a significantly larger share of aggro than their normal behavior.
I figured it had something to do with that, but I was too busy helping people hun them mons and getting my own gear to bother too much with it. Also them heals are so useful.
I’m on a terrible hunt streak the last several hunts have been clusterfucks of all three monsters following each other around the map. I’m making dung pods a permanent staple of my loadout.
I was talking to my dad about the witcher 3 the other day and realized that monhun, for me, is satisfying in a lot of the the same ways as the monster contracts in that game when you have the difficulty turned way up. I like the process of reading up on a monster, equipping yourself to exploit its weaknesses, gathering the right materials for buffs, etc. The difficulty leads me to engage with mechanics I’d normally ignore, and in doing so I’m roleplaying as a witcher / monster hunter in a minor way.
I felt the same way about Witcher 3 and turned the difficulty all the way up for that reason. Ironically, weaknesses in the combat engine make the hardest fights the masses of weaklings (and the hardest single fight the opening battle against a half-dozen necrophages!)
there was one time i took down a tough monster, was riding back to tell the person, only to run into a bunch of little guys who beat me to death pretty quickly, which i found pretty humorous. a bit less so when i found out i had forgotten to save.
EDIT: oh yeah i just hit high rank, but i’m gonna go back and sweep up all my LR optional quests now
Zora Magdoros is probably one of the most boring of the HUGE monsters to fight. I liked the variety that Jhen/Dhan Mohran had going on. You could either fight it whaler style with cannons or ballista or jump on and start hacking at the softer parts. In the second phase you can at least be dumb enough to go fight it head on while you just give him a manicure. Zora was very aptly described as the Car Destruction mini game from Street Fighter.
went back to do a zorah magdaros sesh with four people and there was a whole few minutes where everyone was standing around because they’d done everything and were just waiting for phase 2 to start
